I run a hostel and have just been told that a girl has over $400 missing from her purse. How do I approach this subject with the people that are staying there. I know I may never find out who did it but how can I at least do something? What do you suggest?

Get the police in. They will at least scare the person into not doing it again and the poor girl will know that you did something.

Perhaps you could get a safe for reception that guests could store cash in and only you have a key (you would need to keep a record of how much you were storing). This may stop this problem in future.

Remember - it's not your fault. Things like this happen.

Perhaps if you put up a poster advertsing a reward for finding the "lost" money then it might be given back. Make sure the poster lets people know how deverstated the girl is and how shocked you are.
Don't get angry at all the guests - remember only one person did this.

I hope the money turns up!

Emma has a good answer but the smart thief knows not to do something like that. I'd suggest asking point blank privately. Look for signs of lying. The best one is when the eyes look away to the left. The subject is looking to the creative side of the brain to make up a lie. As apposed to the opposite wich signifies trying to remember. Others are sudden flushness in complection. Shifting body postures. Compulsion to do something with the hands.

I would gather everyone together who is staying at the Hostel and tell them what has happened. WATCH THEIR FACES.

Anyone staying at a hostel doesn't have enough money to do the fancy hotel stays so this girl needs all her money back.

Tell everyone there that obviously one of them took it and if they will return it, anonymously, there will be no need to call the police.

Otherwise, you will have to call the police immediately and everyone who is a guest will be searched and detained.
You can not run a safe establishment when guests do not honor other guests privacy and property. Don't worry about hurting their feelings. They did not care if they ruined your business reputation as a safe hostel.

I guess you could start off by letting residents know they need to keep an eye on their belongings- maybe a sign in the lobby about not leaving their valuables unattended. This doesn't help you find the thief, but it will help eliminate future opportunists from taking things that don't belong to them, by making people aware that they need to be cautious with their valuables,

tell people they have time to own up or you'll get the police involved, tell them to leave the money anomalously
