As they said in the movie "Swingers", "Give a Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie... any Glen will do"
"Good" Scotch is usually "single malt", not blended. If you don't know your boyfriend's favorite than older is usually better, and you generally get what you pay for (more expensive is often, but not always, better.)
Here's my short list:
1. Macallan is a good and well known
2. Sheep Dip is good and less well known
3. I prefer Glenmorangie to Glenfiddich, but both are good
4.... but ask the guy at the liquor store, if he's got a beard, you can trust him :) Go to a store that has a wide selection of single malt scotches, those stores tend to care about what they carry and can make good recommendations.
5.... Go to a stuffy bar with a wide selection of single malt scotches and ask the bartender which one he/she would recommend. If you feel up to it, taste one... or two... or three.

If your boyfriend is a Scotch fan, then he'll very likely appreciate a good single malt.
Far and above anybody else (I've encountered) *THE* definitive resource for good (and bad) Scotch is http://maltmadness.com
For getting the best Scotch for the money, the have a great "bang for your buck" list:
http://www.maltmadness.com/bfyb.html
For getting acquainted with Scotch if you're not an expert (but want to sound like one):
http://www.maltmadness.com/beginners.html
You can settle for some Glen-whatevertheheck, or make a better informed choice from all the reviews that maltmadness.com has. Granted, I too am a fan of Glenmorangie (rhymes with "orange-y"), but others like Glenfiddich and Glenlivet are well known only because they've been marketed to death. You can take a chance on Laphroaig (la-froyg) but that one's a love-it or hate-it because it's so intensely peat flavored. Even if he doesn't like it himself, if he's a Scotch connoisseur, he'll at least appreciate it.

I agree whole heartedly with the answer above me. Just make sure that it is Scotch that he drinks. I am a Bourbon drinker and a lot of people assume I like Scotch also, which I don't care for. I do know qualities.
Take him to the liqour store and walk him past the Scotch. Ask a silly question, "What makes it Scotch?" If he is a conosuer he is likely to pick up a few bottles and give you a winded answer (I have been guilty of this). Remember the one he lingers over and pick it up later!

I got my fiance scotch for christmas last year. Glenfiddich has some nice ones, scotch can range in price from really cheap, to thousands of dollars, glen Merangie (sp?) is also nice.
