If you decide to paint it, sand down the shiney surfaces to be painted to ensure the primer and paint will stick.

I had a friend who took old china bought at a garage sale, broke each plate by dropping them, took the pieces and applied them to an entertainment center, thus creating a mosaic. Looked better than the presswood.

Wow, that mosaic w/mirrored glass idea sounds really wonderful! My suggestions are nil honestly, but I have been getting a magazine, called House Beautiful for many years, and it's always had graet renovation ideas for any kind of furniture or rooms, irregardless of the size of them. Check out some ideas in it, hopefully it can provide you with some excellent ideas as well as explain to you how to implement them. Also, it may also be able to get your started on that mosaic idea!
Take care and good luck!

Angel, here is a cheap really neat way to update your bar, I do not know what decor you have, but this seems to work for most all bar areas. Depending on the size of your bar, go to lowes or any discount store and buy some rolls of brown kraft paper, like paper sacks are made out of. Get wallpaper glue, and some satin finish polyurthane. Tear the pieces of the craft paper in irregular sizes and shapes, about the size of a small dinner plate or saucer. really put the crinkle to them. Flatten them out, with the watered down wallpaper glue saturate them and cover the bar area(wooden area), you can overlap slightly, again there is no certain pattern to put them on, just start on one upper side and work your way down. After you have put them all on the bar, let them dry throughly. Once they are dried, take your satin finish polyurathane and coat several times, let dry inbetween coats. The finishished result almost looks like a leather covered area, it is really sharp. Good luck!
