I need to keep my beagle outside in a dog pin during the day, and I want to know if it's ok to put hay down on the ground for him. The ground where I live is orange clay and it gets everywhere, and I do not want him to get very dirty out there because he comes in at night. Any suggestions?

Our dogs love the horses hay! We have to make them stay away from it. Straw is a different story they do not like it as much, not as comfy I guess?
Some where I got a old horse blanket that is busted. Over the kennels outside I keep this over them. Only one dog at the current time uses the kennels, but he is teaching the puppy to go in there and be comfy (who needs to train the puppy when a older dog does way better lol!).
I have noticed hay gets everywhere if you use it, but it sure is better then that clay!
We have been known when we are in a bigger town that has a thrift store is to get as many blankets as they have in (for cheap of course) and we give some to our dogs and take some and give them to peeps who have outdoor dogs or the dog pound. We have been also known to give these to the church for people too... Old towels work too! I have even put old kids cloths in the kennels. Our dogs come inside whenever they want, so indoor outdoor dogs too.
Good luck with your pooch :0)

No hay is fine in fact I commend you for being concerned for his comfort--It Willl not only help keep him clean it wil help keep him warm and comfortable ---the only thing with hay or straw its harder to clean --may i suggest a bedding pellet? You buy it at the feed stores it absorbs wetness and its easy to pick the litter too I use it in the horse stalls but the manufacture says its used for many other animals such as kennels --when walked on it turns to a soft powder and it has an odor control that cant be beat its all natural and I went from shavings to pellets and have very happy critters

Sure, no problem. We use straw in our kennels only because it's a little cheaper than hay.
It keeps the dog cleaner and can provide some cover when the weather is cold.
Be sure to change it on a regular basis

Hay or straw are both fine to use. However, straw holds heat better. Hay tends to carry and grow more bacteria once wet. If the box is cleaned frequently either are fine. Please make sure you put a cloth or wind barrier to prevent wind from getting in. Wind is more dangerous than cold. It robs the body of heat.

Hay seems to be a really good answer to your problem. It will also keep him warm in the dog house. The only problems I foresee is if he has an allergy to the hay, sneezing, running eyes, itching, and if he digs through the hay to get to the ground...Everyday when you get home put together a bucket of warm water and a little dish detergent. Take a cloth to wash and one to dry and spots on him and his feet before you let him in the house...It's a bit of a hassle, but it won't take much time and will ensure to marks on your carpet...Happy Holidays,..................

We always put hay bales out around our dog's house and some inside on his floor during the winter to help keep him warm. He's 11 yrs old and never had any problems from this.

I wouldn't use hay because that could irritate his little eyes and nose and might even cause some respiratory problems. if i were you i would opt for good old straw hay.....that's what they use for these racing horses stalls. i hope you and pooch can reach a happy and safe end to this question. oh !!!!! plus oat hay is really itchy. definitely go for the straw. good luck i hope this has helped you.

Hay is great to put down on the ground for a dog pen -- my father did it all the time. It will not hurt them. You might want to make a pile in one sunny spot for your dog to have some place soft to lay on.
