I've been addicted to it on and off the past 5yrs whilst spiralling in and out of depressive boats. I mostly use movies and the like to take me away. I'll rent a stack of video's atleast once a week, they are my "painkillers". I am aware that i've let myself fall into a cycle of "living" vicariously through fictional characters and telling myself tomorrow, tomorrow, soon, soon i'll get thing's together and that will be my pay back. Well it's been years now and i'm afraid my dreams and goals are becoming just that - fiction and fantasy.. On some days when i'm faced with reality i realize what i've done because i find it so difficult to cope.. I'm addicted to it and don't know what i'd do with myself if i didn't have this outlet to go to.. what to do, snap out of it yes, it's so logical......but not.

And I thought I was the only one! I too escape from reality by watching 'odd' movies..mostly fantasy or spiritual or 'moving' movies..etc..I'm not much of a reader but I try to read to get away when I can't watch a movie, etc. I love sleeping because I constantly dream and I love dreaming - even if it's a nightmare. I think it would be a good idea to talk with a psychologist about it. I used to talk to mine once a week and it helps SO much to talk to them. Plus you can tell them virtually anything and they won't look at you as 'weird'. If this "fantasy" thing is swallowing your real life then it is time for some control of some sort. Once you regain control of reality in your life...I don't think there's anything wrong at all w/ having an addiction to fantasy ideas/movies ;-) It is fun! And in this world nowadays who *wants* to be in reality? Good luck ;-)

Stop this as soon as possible, get a job, keep your self busy and if your fantasys are attainable like becomeing a doctor or getting married then do what you can to achive them. If not, try coming up with new goals and try to replace them with your fantasys. The longer you stay in your fantasys the more you will stop caring about your life. Your life will end up so bad ( like no friends or job,) that all you will have are your fantasys.

you've found a form of escape, a coping mechanism.....sure it sounds easy, like you could just "snap out of it"...it's just movies!!...but actually it's more complicated than that....you probably need treatment for your depression and you need to learn some healthier coping mechanism before you will be able to quit escaping with your "painkillers".......this is but a symptom of a greater problem....but it sounds like you're ready and wanting help, so that's a good thing!!....you might consider talking to a health care professional to help you get on the right track....good luck

I used to fantasize all the time. I would even talk to people that were not there...not in a 'mental' way, but more in a 'living in a movie' kind of way.

Looking back at it now, it is a bit disturbing, but I grew out of it.
