why do most cough medicines contain alcohol in them?

Actually, only NyQuil does. Supposedly, it helps the other medications work better. Personally I think that if you take enough of it, won't CARE that you are sick.

Delsym is a GREAT cough syrup and contains NO alcohol.

because alcohol acts as a sedative, allowing you to get some sleep in spite of coughing and not being able to breath through your nose.

To make you sleep, which is where the real benefit comes in anyway.
