Cats are a lot more independent than dogs and they also don't require going outside a few times a day. The downside is you have to pick up the cat's litter, but when it's -20 degrees outside, you can be thankful that you don't have to walk them.
A year and a half ago, I wasn't even a cat person. Now I have 2 kittens and they were the one of the best decisions I ever made. They keep me company, they're playful & entertaining, affectionate, and they keep me "in check". If I'm stressed out, upset, sad....I just have to take a look at them and everything, all the tension just kinda drains from my system and nothing else matters. Definitely a stress reliever.
They also don't require AS MUCH energy to keep up with them. Of course they have to play, but you don't have to be as physical when you play with them. It's as simple as waving a wand back and forth on the floor with something fun attached and they just go for it. Or in the case of my kitties, they like to fetch. And they're smaller than some dogs, so they don't take up as much room.
Cats are just great fun. Who needs a TV when you can watch 2 kittens chasing each other?! =)

They give you companionship - if you are patient and show love to the cat it will usually show it back...
A cat with a cat litter box is an easier pet to manage than other pets.
You could leave plenty of food and water as well as a fresh litter box and go away for a few days. Other animals require more attention/ shorter intervals of time when you are away (usually less then 10 hours).

There are no real advantages like monetary value UNLESS you are showing them and you are a breeder--Wait there are reasons what was I thinking--I live on a ranch and my cat Ebony is the best mouser around so that's one good reason--that and she keeps me warm when I sit on the sofa and cuddles with the boys at night to keep them warm too-- they are comforting when you are sad and deep you company when there is no one else around--they are self reliant just food and water (vet care a must too) but all in all they are a great pet to have--

Depends on if he/she is a good cat. Good cats keep the mice and snakes down some even keep the flies and roaches down you know them big wood roaches. It all depends.

1. Cats teach us that material things are not important. You learn to shrug off things like finding your new, $3,000 velvet sofa used as a scratching post. Heck, it's only furniture, you say to yourself as the tender tabby that rendered it to ribbons curls up on your lap and purrs, smiling at you with eyes like glowing jadestones.
2. Cats teach us to be brave. We know those sounds of things crashing to the floor at night, the thumps and knocks and scratching sounds, the occasional tinkle of something glass or ceramic breaking, are caused by the cat. After all, if it was an intruder, kitty would be up here hiding under the bed.
3. Cats help us to know who our real friends are. You know someone is a real, true friend when you know that they won't decide they can do without your company just because they stepped on a hairball your cat just puked. Or they aren't phased by finding cat hairs on their food. And they cherish your company in spite of having to pluck needle-clawed kittens off their legs when they visit you.
4. Cats teach us the importance of priorities. It doesn't matter that your favorite TV show is on right now, or that your mother is on the phone with some emergency; or even that you're late for some important appointment. The litterbox must be cleaned, and right now, because if it isn't, kitty is going to refuse to use it.
5. Cats teach us to learn to be observant of our environment. If we find kitty stretched out as elongated and flat as she can make herself, we know it's hot; if we find kitty neatly curled up with her paws under her like a furry meat loaf, we know it's cold. If we find kitty staring intently at the ceiling, eyes wide and ears quivering with tension, we know there is a spider up there we can't see.
I could go on and on. I love my cats and they love me, they're mysterious and soft and wild and cuddly and beautiful and charismatic, they are never boring and always interesting and just fabulously feline.

They can lesson allergies because you become somewhat immune, they reduce stress in their owners, they are self-cleaning, they are fun to play with, they are loving, they are cute, they are chick-magnets, they will drive out or kill any pests that want to come in the house (like mice)
