It happens. It's not necessarily common, but like any other medical issue, it affects everyone differently. I am Bi-Polar II, and I am rarely depressed. I stay pretty much manic or hypomanic all the time. Of course the meds help me out, but I don't usually get anywhere near a "normal" level between the two. My doctor keeps explaining to my mother that most parents prefer their children to be manic as to depressed, and of course if you are manic, then you know what I mean when I say it's much more enjoyable to be manic than depressed. If you are one of the lucky people that don't get the down side of bi-polar, lucky you.

People with Bipolar disorder go from one extreme (mania) and then to the other (deep depression). Until recently manic depressive was the term. You don't give too much information but, speaking from experience, some manic stages are very long. There is no set time on how long each stage lasts. Some people are deeply depressed for months and then for a week they may be manic. If this is someone you just met they may be Bipolar and you just haven't seen them during a depressed stage. If you are referring to yourself you may not realize when you are in a depressed mode. (You may be in denial) The best thing to do in any case is make sure there is some counseling for the person. I personally do not like to take medication but when on the right kind the difference is releaving.

It can be quite common, but it depends on the psychiatrist. You can get a diagnosis of Bipolar I with a single manic episode and no depressions at all, but many psychiatrists wouldn't make that diagnosis.

You can have as many depressive episodesand hypomanias as you like, but without that one crucial mania, the most you'll ever be is Bipolar 2

A small minority of bipolar patients have only manic episodes and no major depressive episodes. Since it's so uncommon the DSM-IV classifies these people under the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. I've read that only 10% of bipolar patients have only manic episodes.

i have bipolar 1 and i have both depressed and stages of mania. when i'm in a manic state, boy, everything feels great, the house is clean, i want to shop, just do everything. but i cant sleep at night and when that manic stage goes away it hits hard. so yes, i would think to have bipolar 1 you need to have both sides.

That wouldn't be bipolar then, since there's only one extreme of emotions. So it would have a 0% prevalence. That would someone who is probably literally a psychopath. To be bipolar, one would have to display both extremes of emotion, depression and mania.
