I would think that he has found out new information, or someone told him that you were communicating with your ex, and is giving you the opportunity to tell him without him having to "catch" you. I would tell him the truth about it, otherwise you might look like a liar if you have and are not telling him.

Sounds a little like jealousy, most people can not be friends with their ex. So apparently if you are friends with yours, then your current is probably feeling threatened. talk to him about it, see what he says, maybe he needs some reassurance that you and your ex are over. maybe he just wants to really know whats up with your ex. when my current asks about my ex, he is truly asking about his wellbeing, they are actually friends.

Weird one, he could be being sarcastic, on the other hand he could be checking your reaction.
Best to say" i really wouldnt know" and see what he says then.
Hes probably interested in you and wants to make sure your previous relationship is really over! before he moves in for the kill!!
