You just need to learn that dogs don't want to harm you at all!! That is the greatness of dogs. They want to love you and they want you to do the same to them. Just don't get all worried when you pet a dog. Just pet him/her. You will see that they don't bite and want to be your friends. That's why they call dogs man's best friends!!! Just don't be afraid!!!

Good luck with the new dog. I hope you overcome your fear of dogs. :>)

I'm 14 and until...Thanksgiving-ish 2009, i was afraid of dogs. my fear started at birth...with no explanation which made coping harder. The odds of you getting through this by yourself are slim. So when ever you want to do something that is supposed to help you overcome your fear, take a friend along who understands you fear and has actually seen you in fear so they know who to help you. It helps a lot. (once i was so scared, i squeezed my friend's wrist really hard and her hand lost blood flow. fro some reason, squeezing a person's arm helped me cope when i was in the state of fear) But if you MUST do it by yourself, i suggest going really slowly, and doing the method below (that worked for me) with the youngest dog you can find. One-on-One. If possible, partner up with a foster mom from a local rescue group (see if there is a HART chapter in your area) or breeder and try to meet a really young dog that is of a breed with an all around good temper. Knowing a dog from before they can do anything wrong (besides relieving themselves indoors) allows you to form a bond a makes it easier to stretch your boundaries. start out by watch the dog interact with the caregiver and visa versa. then work you way up to petting it dog, holding it, so on.Try seeing this dog semi-often and pushing the limit a little more when you feel comfortable. Walk the dog, hold the dog, get at its level, it will take time but watching the dog grow up will help hope this helps!!! it worked for me over the course of a year. (btw, if u use a friend, make sure they have seen u be in fear....)

I think you should be introduced to dogs slowly. Maybe if you have a friend or family member with a calm dog, that would be ideal. Dogs are lovely animals, and having a fear is unfortunate. I used to have a fear of big dogs, but now I've grown to love them, because I built confidence around one really trustworthy dog. If your dad wants to get a dog, maybe suggest getting a Golden Retriever? Or else a puppy, because you can be there when the puppy is growing up, and shower it with attention and TLC. Dogs can be quite scary sometimes when the really hyper ones jump up and bark, but they usually mean it in good fun. I think having a puppy of your own would be fantastic, because you can grow to love it.

Good Luck with your dog!

desensitization of a phobia has proven the most affective way to date. Phobias are an Unnatural fear. This should only be done under the care of a professional. Just don't try to go out and have others put their dogs in your face. It is a slow process that caters to your security levels and makes adjustments as you progress. Any mental health center should be able to provide you with information to seek help.

My friend was the same way. She was TERRIFIED of dogs. She would always come over to my house. I have several dogs. My little dog would always want to jump on her lap and just love on her, but she would always scream and start shaking. I would have to lock my dog up every time her and her family would come over. She even had her kids afraid of dogs.
She wanted to overcome this real bad. I would get my dog out and I would hold him and she would reach and just touch him at first. She done that several times then she would pet him real quick. We done these exercises over a period of time and now her and her kids are not afraid of dogs. She even has a couple of outside dogs of her own now. If you want to overcome this you will. Good luck...........SG
