Yes it is true because kalishnikov developed his idea at the height of the second world war and perfected it in the the AK-47 and the idea was the property of the state. The Soviet union produced 35million AK's plus they licensed the manufacter of AK's to all of the former Soviet states and. So it is the most abundant gun in the world.

Let's see, did they have a patent office in the USSR back then? I thought the U.S. was the only country that had a Patent office. Correct me if I am wrong.
As far as the post right below mine, it takes a living , breathing human being to pull the trigger on a gun to kill a person. The gun, an inanimate object doesn't do the killing, it is merely and instrument used by people to kill.

The weapon was commissioned by the Soviet government. that is to say, they realised they needed such a gun and told the already well known Kalasnikov to design one. I have never fired any automatics myself because they are so illegal where I live but I have been told by alot of military men that they jam alot and cannot compete with true top of the line weaponry - like M16 and MP5.
Also Grenadier should be smacked. Maybe he wants to compare the stopping power of an AK-47 and an M16A1 using his body as a target.

MESSYYCAN, you're responsible for all the stupidity in this post. YOU should be **** smacked.
ETA: Nathan B., your answer was about as ignorant as MESSYYCANS. Where did you get the idea that AK's jam a lot? They don't. And if you want to try showing me about "stopping power", I'm ready when you are, Billy Badass. Bring a lot of friends with you, because you'll need all the help you can get.

Property of the Russian Government. The man lives a humble lifestyle today. Besides, many countries copied his idea and built cheap knock offs.

When you're working for the Russian government you don't get
to patent anything, it belongs to the state.
Thank you very much, while you're up!
