It really depends on your fitness goals. If you're trying to slim down, then meager portions about an hour before. If you're rying to build muscle mass, then large portions of high protien foods like steak shortly after.

I work out 3 times a week.

It is better to eat 1 hr before you work out and after you work out.

You need to energy to began your workout so you need to eat.
The best things to eat/drink are:
A cup of oatmeal
A Slim-Fast meal replacement drink or other brand meal
replacement drink

You need to eat afterwards to replace the energy you burned off working out and to speed up your metabolism.

If you are working out 3 or more times a week, you need to eat 4 -5 small meals a day.
What works for me is the oatmeal and the meal replacement drinks.
Quacker Oats has great flavored oatmeal that comes in these great packets. Thats equal to one small meal.

They have flavors like strawberries and cream, maple sugar, and others.

If you don't want to drink the Slim Fast shake, there are other brands to choose from. Usually your local supermarket carries there own brand (like Krogers, Meijers, etc.).

Good luck

I would think it would be good to eat something before to keep your motabolism up. You don't have to eat till your completely full but just a little something. I hate working out on a completely full stomach.
