the 99Cents Only Store has food, 3 items for 99cents. Can't get much cheaper than that.

In California, milk, eggs, cheese and meat are fairly expensive. Our farmers would overproduce these things and then whine (or simply go out of business) when the prices dropped too low. Now some get paid to NOT produce and government subsidies keep the prices up.
However, because of a year round growing season in Cali, fresh fruits and vegetables are VERY cheap, but you'll be eating seasonally. This is better for you and the environment, so I don't really mind it. I actually looked forward to the first local strawberries every spring and the first pears every fall.
Now that I'm in Michigan I find myself eating out of cans more and more. It's cheaper. Milk is cheaper here, and so is meat and eggs. Unless the Amish are in the middle of their harvest, fresh fruits and veggies are much higher than I am used to paying. I think most people in my neck of the woods just go out and shoot stuff to eat and then buy canned peas and green beans from the Dollar Tree.
I think I'll move to Baja next. They have a year round growing season, too.

it is partly due to the salary people receive and partly due to the system of manufacturer or farmer sells to the wholesaler & the wholesaler sells to the retailer! Each seller marks up products on their cost basis plus their employees' wages cost. This includes the retailer. Most Retailers don't buy in as big volume as they useto cause of price and not wanting to be stuck with unsellables that are hard to get rid of. It's very hard to know what sells in todays mixed up world! We should have a 2 price system.. higher prices for the rich and lower prices for the poor as long as the
poor exist! Vancouver transit does this for those on low income!

because of the people who like to rip food off. We end up paying for it. Also did you every buy hot soup or something eat it while shopping and let your leftovers sit on a shelf somewhere in the store. Yeah we pay for you too. GRRRR!!! Plus the price of gas don't help either!

Because if it were priced lower, the food companies would go out of business and lay off their employees, who would then go hungry

Because the farmer has to take out a loan in order to plant his crops, then makes back a small profit selling to larger companies who process it and distribute it for a small profit to wholesale companies who make a small profit selling it to the retail business who make a small profit selling it to you.

Because people will pay for it, the food industry is run by corporations .corporations are run on the premise of capitalism..which means they are responsible to their shareholders not to humanity...incidently capitalism is also the reason soo many jobs are being shipped overseas

It is called supply and demand. The suppliers have to make enough money to keep supplying the demand.

Are you serious? Food producers and retailers are not as interested in charity as they are profit.
