Why do people answer questions they don't know?

Hannukah is a holiday unrelated to Christmas that celebrates a miracle that took place more than a century before the Christmas story. It comes around Christmas time, but can be as much as a month away. Since the Jewish calandar is Luneo-stellar its days drift against the Solar Gulian Calander used in the west.

Now that having been said, there is a Jewish
"holiday" that does fall on Christmas. It is on he night of December 24th for Polish and Hungarian Jews, and on the night of January 5th for Russian ones. The holiday is Nittel Nacht, Yiddish for Birth Night.

On Nittel Nacht Jews do nothing productive. Literally. Russian Jews play chess or go to sleep early, and Poles and Hungarians play cards or games.

Why?

In old Europe some of the Christians who had somehow managed to miss the "love your neighbor" part and were generally very bad at being good Christians, would harm Jews found in the street or make them do humiliating things. The Jews took to locking themselves indoors doing nothing that would require a lamp.

Today many still follow the custom because customs are extremely important in Judaism. In AMerica only the extremely religious still keep Nittel Nacht. Also, truth be told, it's kind of fun.

Unless Christmas happens to be at the same time as Hanukkah, it is business as usual. They do whatever they want to do, as Christmas has no meaning for them. My boss who is Jewish usually closes his clinic for the day, but only because it is in a largely Christian area, so it wouldn't be worth his while to open it as he would have no clients to do business with.

I certainly cannot speak for all Jews, but I do know that the local B'nai B'rith organizes volunteers to stand in on some essential service jobs in the public sector so that Christians can have the day off.

It's called Hannukah, the festival of lights. it has something to do with a oil and a lamp and dredels.

If you're asking what they do ON Christmas....they go to the movies, or if your a conspiracy theorist, they meet in a secret underground lair and have their annual meeting to discuss how they will continue to control the world's banks, politics, and media.

The catholic kids go to mass; then go home and open their presents. The protestant kids open their presents and play with them at once. The Jewish kids go down to their dad's warehouse, find it's comletely sold out and then sing, "What A Friend We Have In Jesus"
