How do you break the habit of nail biting? I have done it most of my life and now that my daughter has started it I want to quit. It's hard for me to tell her not to do it when she sees me doing it. She has even told me that if I am doing it then it must not be that nasty. I would appreciate any help that you can give.

There is supposed to be nail polish avail., that when you bite on your nails it tastes horrible. Plus maybe you and your daughter should do some research as to all the bad crap and bacteria that ends up under your nails that you are ingesting, maybe that will disgust you enough to stop. Try growing them out...and painting them. I used to bite mine years ago (early teens) but when I started growing them and having nice looking nails, I became proud of them and would never think about making a snack out of my nails(and whatever lurks beneath them). People have always asked me if my nail were fake and they are definately real. Grow them out and be proud of them, take pride in them.
Could also be a problem with your nerves....if you have a lot going on upstairs maybe talking to a professional and calming your nerves may help.

my mom always slapped my hands. but i found a better way. when i wanted to quit. if you clean your nails with polish remover, then the alcohol in the remover will stay on your nails and make them taste nasty. so all you have to do is think of that taste when you go to bite your nails.

Acrylic nails worked for me in the beginning. Now all I need to do is use regular nail polish on my real nails and it works as a reminder not to nibble.

Also, carry a nail file EVERYWHERE with you. Having a chip that you just have to "fix" is the trigger that's most likely to get me worrying at my nails with my teeth.

I had this same problem for my entire life. I started to get solar nails done when I was in college, and it's eliminated the problem. Get fake nails for a while, and it will teach you not to bite them. Good luck!

I've tried everything....I'm 38 and have been doing it my entire life. My husband does too. I figured out why I bite my nails...I don't like the feeling of the nails on my skin...so I keep them really super short. I know that sounds weird...But it's the way it is for me.

Best wishes.

me too, always been a nail biter. Ugh what an ugly habit!! I've found that when I did quit, I polish my nails with a clear polish, or light pink. I've used nail strengtheners also, they work well. When you put your nails in your mouth you can taste the polish, and I've found it helps
good luck

Kids are so much smarter than they get credit for!!! LOL Try putting a quarter in a jar every time you or your daughter do it. Then use the money to go celebrate somewhere that you both quit! Wear gloves. Buy the stuff you paint on that tastes bitter. Good Luck to you both!
