There are services that can do this for you. It would be much
cheaper than buying your own equipment.

Assuming you have a projector, a video camera and a video capture card installed in your PC nothing (you might not even need the capture card if it's a digital camera.)

Simply point the projector at a wall and capture using video camera and PC. Now someone will come along and complain that this is terrible however it is the cheapest way. You can buy very expensive equipment or pay someone a lot of money to do it.

I have done the above method and it does work and the quality is not that bad. It's up to you however. Give the cheapo DIY method a go and if it's not good enough then splash the cash.

You can search the net for tips on this as there are a lot of people have done the same thing.

Ohh yeah before I forget you will also need a DVD writer and some software to author your own DVD's.

Edit: If you are going to spend lots of money on this make sure you find a company that scans each frame individually. The machines that you put the projector in one end and the camera in the other are not great, I've seen lots of horror stories on the net from people who have paid good money for poor quality transfers using this method.

Cine Film To Dvd Equipment

Well DF's way is one way to do it. It's the easiest and cheapest way, and still offers pretty good quality. But if you really have way too much time on your hands, this should be interesting to do. Get a pretty good digital camera 3-4 Megapixels or above, and take pictures of the movie frame by frame. (No, Im not crazy. Thats why I said, if you have WAY too much time on your hands). Then once your done, upload them into your computer (this could take a while), and then put them into a program that lets you make sequences (I think Quicktime Pro does, I use After Effects, although I wouldnt recommend buying it just for this). Then make sure you set your frame rate at the frame rate of your original film. Then scale to a NTSC size, or even better HD size. This should provide you with an extremely clear video of your film. However, like I said, don't do this unless you have a TON of time on your hands. Hope this helps!

My Dad had the same problem but transfered them to video as dvd's were not the storage medium at the time. He got at device the projected the film on to a screen which then recorded it on to video. As the was over 10 yrs ago I'm sure that a similar device would do it straight to dvd.
The equiment was called telecine transfer machine as to who made it Im not sure.

See links for some ideas of equiment you need.

Or pay a company to do this. Either way it looks like you may have to pay a bit of money to do it.

Totally agree with DF. Companies charge extortionate amounts to do this and they are no clearer to watch.

We set the projector up on an ironing board and played the film onto a screen whilst the digital video recorded the screen from in front of the projector. Then we recorded the films onto dvd through the dvd recorder.
