My best guess: There was a culture of abuse that grew up in the RCC for too many years - and it was not dealt with. Kids (people) did not come forward because of fear.
Now that so many have come forward...it's easier (still traumatic...but easier) for victims to come forward.
I think for a lot of reasons, the RCC is cleaning up its act, and we will see less and less abuse. Thank God!

They get caught now because people no longer hide these things under the carpet hoping they will go away.
Priests have desires just the same as anyone else and I presume this is the easiest way for them to put these desires into action.
Any priest who abuses children should be thrown out of the church and left to the authorities to deal with.
There crimes against children have been covered up for years by the bishops and cardinals etc and these people should also pay the price.
After all they are all well educated people but still do not have the decency or courage to leave the church.
They try to keep onto their precious jobs while abusing young children and standing up on the pulpit afterwards to preach to the public about life and god.
In conclusion as a catholic myself I say they are a sick shower bastards and it is time to get them out of our churches.

Misbehaving is putting it nicely. The Catholic church has had thousands of cases of child molestation by priests. It is just amazing how prevalent it is. The church is supposed to be the safest most holy place there is but is full of very dark secrets. The Los Angeles Catholics settled with some 50 cases of child molestation just last week. Google it up and you can see for yourself. I am a white adult male non church goer and have never even thought of molesting a child. Priests in the Catholic church are not permited to get married or have sex. This I am sure has something to do with it. To be fair, I am not bashing the Christian religion I was raised one and suppose that is what I still am. From what I have read, this sort of thing is also very prevalent in the Muslim religion. I was just reading yesterday that the Taliban in Afghanistan had to put out a pamphlet telling their older members not to sleep with boys. I believe you can go to CNN or FOX websites and search it. I do not understand homosexuality to begin with at least among males but molesting a child is a crime beyond comprehension

certainly Nick, i reccall analyzing touching directly to the Rcc helping a family contributors who had 6 toddlers and basically found out touching directly to the seventh. because of the actuality the mum might unfastened her existence if the being pregnant proceed, the church did help the technique. the different 6 toddlers might have lost their mom and the unborn newborn had in undemanding terms a 30 or 40% existence expectency. i don't know why you are worried confessing to a clergyman. please digital mail me in case you may prefer to speak a splash extra discreetly. i will't lie, there have been cases while i might circulate to a diverse church for confession yet.... it is not undemanding to confess your falings out loud - some cases that's the guy's inner worry. you're able to truly come across a pastor/priest or deacon that could help!!

Out of all the THOUSANDS of priests in the world, why is it that fewer than a hundred have been accused of such a thing?
And yet, people make such a HUGE deal out of it. Yes, what the priests did was wrong. No, it does not mean that all of them do it.
Therefore, your entire question is flawed and can't truly be answered.

Anytime we are told not to do something, the desire for that things rises in us. For example: In the next 10 minutes .. do not touch your nose!
Otherwise, the idea of a celebate priesthood is outdated, and like so many old ideas, this one needs to be overhauled.

The question should be why do so many priests not get caught. There are many more out there molesting little children that have never been caught.

Because they are doing what they are not supposed to, and I'm so glad that the victims are finally speaking out. It's only been recently that it's been 'ok' to acknowledge abuse...otherwise it was taboo and it was always the victim's fault.

there's just a bigger focus on them because of their position of "higher" moral command. everyone is perishing in sin.
