Ok so I was wondering, I just had both upper ears pierced, and they are little gold hoops.. But Ive heard that studs are better (more comfortable)... I am not having trouble with them, except for the fact that they are really sore..(had them done 3 days ago).. In fact I cannot even tell they are in unless I bump them, and forget even sleeping on my sides.. Is it too soon to change the hoops to studs?? Or just leave them alone..

Your ears are going to be sore, you just got the piercing, be patient...keep them clean and give your ears time

CBRs ('hoops') are best for a piercing because they are easiest to clean and accommodate for swelling as well. The problem with studs is that the post is short and often an inappropriate length and gauge, the backing cannot be cleaned very well and it increases risk for infection and keloids/scarring. If you get a small barbell, that may be fine, but could still pose a problem in terms of comfort and efficent healing.

It is too soon to change the jewelry and if you are really having problems, go to a professional piercer to help you change the jewelry to make sure you get clean, high quality jewelry. If you do have the jewelry changed, you will be setting back healing time a bit. The more you change the jewelry, the higher your risk for keloids and infection. Cartilage piercings take 6 months to a year to heal and during that time you should not be changing the jewelry unless advised by a professional piercer.

Basically, be patient. You've had the piercings for 3 days, they won't be magically healed over night. Keep the area clean, take Motrin or Midol for pain and swelling. If you have concerns or problems, contact a local professional piercer and visit them in person if need be.

I have found hoops to be far more comfortable in the upper ear than studs ( you have to sleep with your ear folded to prevent poking yourself with the prong in the begining) Also, I found the tightnesss of the backing very irritating. I just think small hoops look better as well.

I say if you have anything peirced from the middle of your ear and up, hoops are fine. Like my cartilage has a hoop and I always have it in. Its a small one though, dont have anything big. I have studs in my other three holes. I've had little gold hoops I wore them in my first holes and then stubs in the other two and then the hoop in my cartilage. If you just had your ears peirced dont mess with the ones you have in them, wait awhile, and clean them everyday. And sometimes if you just changed your earrings they could be irritating your ears because they're cheap. Thats not fun, it happens to me. They hurt, the feel hot, they're red, and ichy.

I'd say studs because, the higher you go the smaller it should be. Let all your hoops hang in the lower ear.

hoops! but you shouldnt change them for at least 6 wks, they will get infected if you do. to speed healing, soak in a mixture of water and sea salt for 10 minutes everyday. it also eases the soreness as well.

Hoops are more feminine, and less chance of developing a keloid.

If they're not sore, i'd go ahead and change them. Make sure your hands are clean when you do. Studs look better anyway.
