Christ says that "whatsoever you do unto the likes of them, you do unto me."

Yes, we as Christians should do more. But, Christ also said "you will always have the poor among you."

What to do? I do what I can. I give, but I also feel it is important for people to know that this gift actually comes from our Lord. I give to Christian charities.

I am currently supporting a little 10 year old girl who lives in India in a Christian commune for AIDS victims.

We are to give, but give wisely. Research the charity you want to give to, and most important, give with a generous happy heart and uphold to your commitment.

I also tithe 10% to my Church. But what my Church does is, from it's earnings, the Church titles 10% to charity, and also has an outreach program to the community. Every weekend we have workers who go out to the neighborhoods of the elderly and pull weeds, mow lawns, fix fences, repair roofs, and more.

And if you look in your own neighborhood, you will find many in need right at your doorstep.

For the homeless, if you want to give, volunteering your time in a shelter is giving. It isn't just about money. It's giving of yourself.

I don't know about the tax supported part, what I am familiar with are churches that struggle just to pay the bills. Not all churches are huge or prosperous. You do make a good point though, and yes we all ought to be about doing the business God would have us do. I hate to put it this way, but the fact of the matter is, if there were more people in the church, there would be more money. More could be done. This must NEVER be the reason why we try to get people to come to church though. It is not the right reason. As far as opening their doors as a shelter for the homeless, where I am, there are zoning and code laws which forbids it. We could not legally do it.

Yes, if everyone helped the homeless people, there would not be any out there! You are wrong about some homeless people chooseing to live on the streets. I know for a fact that some do choose to live on the streets.

In the old testament when the commandments were given, God instructed people on how to care for the poor, alien, widow and orphan....In a sense a welfare system was put into place.
Over time we have relieved ourselves of this responsibility and placed it on the system. Not to say there is anything wrong with this just that it does not relieve us of the burden of helping and assisting when needed. It also states a man must be willing to work and not be lazy. You are correct that many did not do this to themselves. But many have and find it easier to take then to make money. For this reason I believe if you start to help you help until you have finished the job. You relieve the immediate burden and then you assist in finding work, housing, transportation

I agree with your point than many of the homeless have brought their problems on themselves.
There are though many needy people who live on the streets at no fault of their own .
I think all peoples whether Christians or members of other religions should help the really genuine homeless people ,
not just Christians.

Yes, Christians should do these things but just meeting the basic needs of others is not the primary work that we are called to do.

Our tithes go to support the ministers or those who are directly involved in the work of soul winning.

Our offerings are freewill to provide for all other benevolent aid or useful good works for our fellow human beings.

The work of God encompasses all the tools and their uses for winning souls to Christ.

Meeting basic needs is one among many avenues to a person's heart for the purpose of bringing them to Christ.

If we are good Christians we help all of our brothers who are in any kind of "sorrow, sickness or any other adversity"...is goes back to the Golden Rule....do unto others....some of these people have no way out of their circumstances and really depend on the charity of others....true, there are a few who take advantage, but I would rather err on the side of those in need.

I believe that everyone should help. some churches already does. if everyone had old clothes that does not fit or want they should drop it off at a church and tell them this is whats its for. I know alot of people will bring it to a thrift store. but if they bring it to a church thats helping the homeless.

I feel it is in our job to act out of love. Keep in mind god may come in all disguises so make sure you live a blameless life as much as possible because ever thing we do will be judge by the almighty and remembered on judgment day.

Yes, you should donate what money you could to charities or give money to people on the street. Just don't flaunt it or make sure people see because then it will take away the good deed.
