As a person who has been into Home Theater, working in it, installing it etc. I would say the first 2 answers are incorrect. While parts may have been true in the past, its not true anymore. As of right not a plasma TV, barring an issues with the TV, should last well over 10 years. This depends a lot on how much you use it. Most people will get more than that. Also while prices in LCD's have come down, Plasmas are still cheaper when you do a size comparison.

That being said the pictures are different, and depending on the room will play a part in. If your room has a lot of light then I would go with LCD. Plasmas have a glare to them since the screen is like a window. LCD's do not have this problem. LCD's can be a little sharper. They are however not as vibrant, do not produce colors as well, and seem less 3-D than plasmas. The picture looks very matted.
Personally I will never buy an LCD unless I need one smaller than I can find in a plasma. This theory is very prominent with people who have worked with both.

Studies show that Plasma tvs wear out in ten years, since the parts are not replaceable. LCDs last alot longer. I'd tell you more, but I don't remember that much from my research report that I did a few years ago. I do remember that Plasma tvs are more expensive and at the end of my paper I recommended LCD.
