You could work your way out of Japan and visit during the holidays. You have your own life, dear :D Don't just hop out of Japan, but work it in the opportunity to get out. Set it as a goal!

Funny, you're in the opposite position I'm in. I want to at least visit, maybe work in Japan (JET program) for a year or so, but I'm so tied down here in the US because of my family.

Are you Japanese?
Why does she want you to live there, for educational reasons? jobs?
You should be able to make your own decisions.
You say you are not close to your Mum but you still respect her it seems. Just be honest, maybe say that you want to take a break from Japan, or if you are living together, maybe leave brochures lying around of other travel destinations that she will see.
Maybe tell a family friend and then they can hint it to her next time they talk.
Good luck.

Are you a Japanese citizen? Is she forcing you to stay or are you just afraid she'll be hurt if you leave.
