Christmas Ornament Recipes
CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS
3/4 to 1 c. applesauce
1 (4.12 oz.) bottle ground cinnamon
Mix applesauce and cinnamon together to form a stiff dough. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters. Make a hole for ribbon. Carefully place on rack to dry. Let air dry several days, turning occasionally. If you prefer they may be baked at 150 degrees for 5-6 hours.
CINNAMON SCENTED CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS
4 oz. can (about 1 c.) cinnamon
1 tbsp. cloves
1 tbsp. nutmeg
3/4 c. applesauce
2 tbsp. white glue
In medium bowl, combine cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Add applesauce and glue; stir to combine. Work mixture with hands 2 to 3 minutes or until dough is smooth and ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Divide into 4 portions. Roll out each dough portion to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut dough with cookie cutters. Using straw or toothpick, make small hole in top of ornament. Place cut out ornaments on wire rack to dry. Allow several days to dry, turning ornaments over once each day. Use these ornaments to decorate gifts, hang on tree, etc.
GINGERBREAD ORNAMENTS
3/4 c. cinnamon
1 tbsp. allspice
2 tbsp. cloves
1 tbsp. nutmeg
1 c. applesauce
Combine first 4 ingredients and blend well. Stir in applesauce and mix well. Roll out 1/4 inch thick on ungreased cookie sheet. Cut with cookie cutters of different shapes. Put a tiny hole in top with toothpick. Let dry 4 days. Put string through hole and hang on Christmas tree. Can also make hearts for all year home ornaments. Smells wonderful.
BREAD DOUGH ORNAMENTS(NOT EDIBLE)
Mix 1 slice white bread (without crust) and 1 tablespoon glue. Keep wrapped. Mix assorted acrilic paints into separate piles of dough. This takes awhile to mix. For white dough you must use white paint. Flatten with a rolling pin. Shape into forms or use cookie cutter. Brush 1 tablespoon glue mixed with 1 tablespoon water over shapes. Stick wire into dough and let set at least 2 hours.
Cinnamon Ornament Recipe
(Non-Edible)
This recipe makes wonderful tree or table top scented ornaments. Line the mantle with these "cookies". THEY ARE NOT TO BE EATEN
Combine in a bowl:
1 Cup Cinnamon
1 Tablespoon Ground Cloves
1 Tablespoon Nutmeg
Add to dry mixture:
3/4 Cup Applesauce
2 Tablespoons White Glue
Stir to mix well. Work the dough with your hands for about 3 minutes until the dough is smooth and the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
Divide the dough in half. Keep one portion covered to prevent drying while working with the other.
Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out the desired shapes and place on a wire rack. Be sure to poke a hole in the pieces you will want to run ribbon through before drying.
Allow the pieces to dry for a couple of days. You will begin to smell the wonderful scents almost immediately.
When the pieces are dry, you can finish assembling your 3-D ornamental cookies following the directions included with your cutters. You can use the "Royal Icing" recipe to "glue" the pieces together. It dries hard and will last a long, long time.
Finish decorating your 3-D cookies as you would any other cookie, using a royal icing that will harden and last. Ribbons and bows really enhance their charm.
Recipe #1
1/2 cup cinnamon
1/2 cup store bought applesauce (homemade sauce will likely be too watery)
Or, any equal portions of both ingredients depending on the quantity you desire.
Directions:
Stir together cinnamon and applesauce with a spoon until the dough becomes stiff, then use your hands to create a ball of dough.
Place the ball of dough on a sheet of waxed paper, flatten slightly with your fingers.
Place a second sheet of waxed paper over the top of the dough and roll out dough to about 1/8 inch thick.
Use cookie cutters or your own template shapes.
Air dry creations on a waxed paper-covered cookie sheet or a cooling rack for at least 24 hours until they are completely hard.
Recipe #2
Mix 1 cup cinnamon and 1 cup applesauce with 1 Tablespoon of white glue. You want a consistency that can be rolled with a rolling pin but not quite as sticky or it will stick to your counter! Sprinkle counter with cinnamon and roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters. Cut a hole in shape with the straw so you will be able to hang them. Let dry about 24 hours. They shrink as they dry. Cut lengths of gold thread, make loops and hang. they will keep their scent for a few years. Refresh scent with cinnamon fragrance oil.
Recipe #3
1 cup cinnamon
1 tbsp. ground cloves
1 tbsp. nutmeg
1 tbsp. allspice
1 tbsp ginger
3/4 c. applesauce
In medium bowl, combine cinnamon, cloves, allspice,
ginger & nutmeg. Add applesauce, stir to combine.
Work mixture with hands 2 to 3 minutes or until dough
is smooth and ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
Cut dough with cookie cutters.
Using straw or pencil, make small hole in top of ornament.
Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 150 degrees for 1 hour
Remove from the cookie sheet and bake on the oven
racks for another hour and a half.
Use these ornaments to decorate gifts, hang on tree, etc.
Recipe #4
Combine a 16 oz. jar of applesauce, 8 oz. or more of cinnamon, and 1 oz. of either allspice, nutmeg or cloves (I use allspice).
Combine all ingredients and mix *very* well.
Roll out dough to 1/4" thickness (putting plastic wrap around the rolling pin works well).
Cut out the ornaments .
While dough is still wet, poke a hole in each ornament .
Dry in a 150F oven for about 3 hours, turning halfway through.
Creative tips:
For extra "sparkle," mix in decorative glitter.
Make your own shapes by trimming the dough with a table knife following around patterns you've cut from cereal box cardboard.
After cutting out shapes, use a drinking straw to create holes for jewelry or ornaments.
Use toothpicks to make smaller holes for threading. Leave in dough until dry and remove.
For a wall hanging, thread a colored ribbon through the shape.
For a brooch, decorate with fabric paint and glue a metal clasp pin to the back (available at craft stores).
Decorate creations with acrylic paint or fabric.
The creations can be used as decorations on a gift box or bag.
Important note: Adult supervision and participation is required for this activity.
You and your toddler will have a great time with this simple recipe for holiday ornaments. There is no cooking requirement, so it's a safe activity as well. Friends and family will love to hang these on their trees this year, and the spicy smell is long-lasting. They also make a great addition to gift tags.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: indefinite
Here's How:
The night before, drain the applesauce through cheesecloth and discard the fluid.
Cover your toddler (and yourself) with an apron or old shirt.
Prepare a surface to roll the dough onto. I like to use wax paper.
In a bowl, mix the applesauce and the cinnamon thoroughly and pat into a solidified ball.
Take about one cup of the mixture and place on the wax paper.
Place another piece of wax paper and place on top of the mixture and pat or roll until the ball is flattened and about 1/4" to 1/2" thick.
Cut the dough with cookie cutters. Use a straw to make a hole near the top so the ornament can hang.
Allow the ornament to dry. Depending on thickness, this may take 24-48 hours.
Thread a paperclip, ornament hook or curl ribbon through the hole.
Tips:
If you don't have cheesecloth to drain the applesauce, you can use an old birdseye weave cloth diaper (flatfold) or other very thin fabric.
Be careful not to make the hole too close to the top or breakage may occur.
Ornament hooks can be purchased in bulk at your local hobby store.
Be sure to use sweetened applesauce. The sugar content helps hold the ornament together and prevent breakage.
What You Need:
One 16 ounce jar of sweetened applesauce
8 ounces cinnamon
Mixing Bowl
Wax Paper
Cheesecloth
Curl ribbon, paperclips or ornament hooks
Holiday cookie cutter(s)
One drinking straw
INGREDIENTS
3 cups applesauce
3 cups ground cinnamon
DIRECTIONS
Mix applesauce and cinnamon together until it is thick enough to hold a form when cut into cookie cutter shapes. Flatten the mixture on a flat surface and cut into cookie cutter shapes.
Place cookie shapes on a cookie sheet to dry for 3 to 4 days depending on the size and thickness of the cookies. If using as a hanging ornament, make hole with toothpick before drying.
CINNAMON ORNAMENTS
1 c. cinnamon
1 c. applesauce
Mix equal parts cinnamon and applesauce, stir and knead until doughy. If it is too wet, add a little flour. Roll out thinly, cut shapes. Be sure to poke a tiny hole at the top of your shape for threading a loop through. Lay shapes flat on a screen or rack to air dry. When dry, you may push thread or wire through the hole for a hanger. Use as Christmas tree ornaments or closet air fresheners. They smell great! No, they do not get moldy; but handle carefully because they do break.
CINNAMON ORNAMENTS
4 oz. cinnamon
1 tbsp. nutmeg
1 tbsp. cloves
2 tbsp. glue - white
3/4 c. applesauce
Combine dry ingredients first. Then add the applesauce and glue. Mix with hands until smooth. Divide into 4 portions. Roll mixture to thickness of your cookie cutter. Use a straw to punch a whole for your hook. Place ornaments on foil to let dry for 2-3 days.
3 cups applesauce
8-10 ounces ground cinnamon
24-48 pieces ribbons (6 inches long, shiny red or gold works well)
5 or Less Ingredients
Christmas
Line a strainer with cheesecloth or paper towels and place over a large bowl.
Pour applesauce into strainer and let it drain for about 8 hours.
There will be at least a cup of liquid to drain off (if you're in a hurry, you may eliminate this step, but you will need about 3 or 4 ounces extra cinnamon to get a firm dough) Starting with half of the cinnamon, add to the applesauce and stir until blended.
Gradually add more cinnamon until dough is stiff enough to roll out.
You may not need the entire amount of cinnamon called for.
Place portion of the dough onto a sheet of plastic wrap or wax paper and place another sheet on top of this.
Use a rolling pin, and roll to 1/4-inch; thickness.
Peel off the top sheet of plastic wrap.
Cut into shapes using seasonal cookie cutters.
Carefully slide a spatula under the cut cookie shapes and carefully place each of these on a baking pan coated with Pam.
Next, use a toothpick and poke a hole near the top of each shape (for threading with hanging-ribbon later).
Make sure the hole is big enough to accommodate the ribbon as it will shrink quite a bit during the baking.
Run the toothpick around the edges of each ornament, smoothing any uneven edges, if necessary.
Place in 175* oven for 6 to 8 hours, until firm and dry.
(your house will smell wonderful during this time!) Remove"cookies" carefully and cool completely.
You may decorate with glue, glitter, paint, etc.
(I prefer these without decoration) Lace with ribbon, tie off at top& hang on tree.

“Cookie” Ornaments
Dough
1 c. ground cinnamon (buy it cheap at the dollar stores or in bulk at your grocery store bakery)
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 c. applesauce
2 T. Tacky or Elmer's white glue
Cookie cutters
Paint, if desired for decorating (fabric paint works great!)
Red, green or white ribbon
Instructions:
1.Combine first 5 ingredients until stiff dough forms, kneading well with hands. Roll dough out onto cinnamon dusted surface, about 1/4-inch thick, then cut with desired cookie cutter shapes such as teddy bears, hearts, Christmas trees, snowflakes, stars, candy canes, gingerbread boy (or girl), angels, etc...
2.Lay ornaments on a sheet of waxed paper and cut a small hole in the top (a plastic straw works well), then put in a safe place for drying. Depending on how dry your home is, it can take about 2-4 days for the ornaments to dry completely. Be sure to turn the ornaments over several times a day to ensure even drying.
3.When ornaments are dry, use fabric paint to decorate if desired (just like you would a cookie), then thread a pretty ribbon through the hole for hanging on Christmas tree, or all throughout the house!
