I can tell by their behavior...9 mo. eating bushes and digging in the yard. By 8 years, they move slower and are more patient.

Generally, by looking at the teeth and general physical condition/appearance. When young, teeth will be the most reliable and can determine age to the week. As the dog gets older, it is a bit more fuzzy and an age range can be guessed (i.e. 5 - 7 years or 9 - 12 years). A vet or competent shelter employee should be able to do this

There are a number of ways, depending on previous overall living conditions, ie environment. Teeth are not always the obvious answer, rather depends on what the dog has been fed. For example, I have a 10 year old giant breed whose teeth are in excellent condition, but a certain "greying" about the gills and perhaps a slowing down of overall mobility would suggest she isn't a teenager any longer, hehe!
Some breeds appear to age faster than others, again mostly dependent on how they have been reared. So you would need to supply a little more info about the dog in question.

Usually by their teeth, their general body condition and overall build. After that some of it is guessing, for example a 3 year old dog and a 5 year old dog can look very similar, especially in the "perpetually young" breeds.

Doggy years work like this. The first year of their life counts as only one. The second year and thereafter counts as seven. So if you have had your dog for 5 years then your dog would be 29 years old.

As someone else said, ask your vet. They can tell by their teeth and will estimate the age.

You can't ask them because they will lie. Ask a friend or relative
