God never would calamity. We do this ourselves.
People with hard cold hearts like to pretend that they are following God's directives but this is never true.
They are simply following their own distortions of God's loving word.

This is a difficult question to answer because as humans we can not fully understand why God does a particular thing or rather allows it to happen. We just have to have faith that He knows what He is doing. Sometimes that is difficult to do.
In some of the answers you've received, there was mention of God hardening Pharaoh's heart against letting the Jews leave Egypt. Yes, in this instance He did harden a heart but I agree that it was to show the Jews that once they were allowed to leave it was because of God's power.
Hardening a heart against believing in Him? Yes, I think that is possible but you have to remember He will give us numerous chances to accept Him and to come to Christ.
He worked on me for over 2 years before I finally came to Christ - although I didn't realize it at the time.
If I'd waited one more day to accept Jesus, would He have hardened my heart? I don't know but I'm so very thankful that I accepted His invitation when I did.

Assuming a literalist interpretation of the stroy...
God hardened the heart of Pharoah so that the people of Israel would know that it was by God's hand they were delivered and not by their own, or the hand of Moses. In numerous stories of the Hebrew Bible you find this motif of either the odds being so great against Israel that God must have produced the victory, or the victory was with held until the only way the victory takes place is by the power of God.

I wondered the same thing. God will allow this because they were not lovers of the truth. Just like he said in end times many will follow "a different gospel" or follow an antichrist, they did not seek the truth.
2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 (New King James Version)
10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

It's less of an active action on God's part and more of a reaction of someone's heart to God. God hardened Pharaoh's heart, but it was because of Pharaoh's reaction to God. Kind of like leaving butter and clay in the sun. The sun doesn't change, but butter melts and clay hardens. Okay, odd analogy I suppose, but you get the point.

God doesn't harden hearts. The world, perhaps the devil, and the hearts' owners do this to themselves when they forget to lubricate with the spirit of God.

For His glory.
Exodus 6:1Then the LORD said to Moses, "Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country."
Exodus 7:3 But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and though I multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in Egypt, he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it."
Exodus 14:4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD." So the Israelites did this.

God does not harden someone's heart.
If a person allows hate or dispair to harden their heart, then they have lost their way from God's path. Please do not blame God for the actions of humans.

He doens't harden your heart... He wants you to open up your heart to Him.. but it's called the reedom of choice.. He lets you choose what you want to do and if you don't want to accept him then he'll always be there for you when you do come to realize that he wants what's best for you.. just make sure that it's not too late though

He didn't. He just allowed people to harden their own hearts--like with Pharoah in Moses' day.
