The appropriate title is Native American. In the old days they were called Indians because Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas and though he had landed in India; hence he erroneously called the indigenous people on the island where he landed: Indians.

Migrants from Asia.ie. China and above that Mongolia. They migraqted through Russia and over the Bering Strait. Columbus thought he landed in India, which was why he was calling them Indians.
