My cat is 7 years old(human years) and she just started peeing on the floor. She goes like two feet in front of her litter box in different areas around that same spot. I already checked the obvious stuff if the litter box was clean and it was. At first I thought she was mad at me for being gone a lot so I have been home with her more and she's still doing it. It's not a new litter box or a new home. I don't get it. I tried to rub her face in it and spank her butt but she did it again this morning!!! I can not afford to take her to the vet and I don't know what to do. She still goes in the litter box but she wont pee in it. What is wrong with her. PLEASE HELP.

The #1 reason that a cat starts not using her litterbox is a medical one. You will not have any success by spanking your cat or rubbing her nose in her pee. She is trying to tell you that something is wrong and it needs to be investigated by a vet.

You are suffering and she is suffering and there is no other solution. You must find the funds to get her treated or you are going to have to live with this indefinitely.

When she has been treated appropriately you should try Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter (Pet Smart sells it) and buy a NEW litterbox. I would guess you have been using the same litterbox for the seven years you have had her. Plastic litterboxes are only good for at most TWO years as they pick up odors detectable to the cat and not to humans. No matter how scupulously you clean it and change the litter the smell has seeped into the plastic and makes it unpleasant for her.

If you do those things without medical treatment for her it will not work. The vet treatment must come first.

Not a good idea to rub her face in it or spank her, hurts her and doesn't work anyway.

I've read that once they start peeing in a spot they go back to the same place. Move the box so it covers the spot where she's been peeing and see if that works.

Perhaps she doesn't like the litter you have in the box. If it's a high-sided box, perhaps she can't get over the edge anymore.

Be thankful it's the same spot and not all over the house and not on your bed or clothes.

You need to take your cat to a vet. There are several conditions that can cause a cat to urinate outside the litter box. She might have a Urinary Tract Infection or she might be diabetic. Both of these are serious, life threatening conditions that can only be treated by a vet. Call vets to find one that will take payments or for one you can afford. If your cat has a UTI she can die in a few days. Chances are it's not a behavior problem, so doing things like rubbing her face in it won't work. Even if it were a behavior problem rubbing her face in it is cruel and she doesn't understand what you are doing. Please don't do that to her again. Good Luck!

Does the cat deliberatley go over to the litter tray and then pee outside it instead or does it just go where it is. My sisters cat had a problem which meant it couldn't feel when it needed to pee so when it needed to come out it did, wherever the cat was. It cost her a fortune at the vets and the poor thing still isn't completely right.

Sorry to put a downer on things x

Not nice eh? Perhaps she has a problem and needs to go to the vets? You could try putting lots of newspaper on the floor around her litter tray - it won't look great but it might make her go back in the litter tray, and, if she doesn't I guess at least you can just throw the paper away. Are you catching her? If you are, how about picking her up (mid flow kind of thing) and putting her back in the litter tray? Does she have to use a litter tray (no pun intended) - perhaps you could try to encourage her to go outside? Personally I would ring the vets for advice.

DO NOT EVERY PUT THEIR FACE IN IT AND SPANK THEM!!!! That's abuse and it proves NOTHING. They already did it and forgot about it. Doing that just makes them fear and hate you. That was an old wives tale and it's been proving doing that is abuse and doesn't work. Besides, spanking a cat is very dangerous and will break their bones because they're very delicate. If you can't take care of it---why did you get it??? Pets are little luxuries and we have to take care of them or NOT get them in the first place. Your cat OBVIOUSLY has either a urinary tract infection or kidney disease and guess what? If you don't take her to the vet NOW, she'll probably die and her death will be on YOUR hands. My cat went through that and she had both a uti and kidney disease, but I rushed her to the vet ASAP and she's fine. I feel sorry for your cat if you're the owner.

My guess is a bladder infection. You'll need to take her to the vet.

Also, to prevent her from going on the same spot or in the same area again, you might want to shampoo the carpet with something that eats the enzymes. Usually if a cat goes on the carpet once, they'll keep returning to the same spot or area to do their business again.

Hope this helps.

Two things. don't hit cats, their back bones are really fragile. Like all animals, their bones are designed for jumping and what not. Not for getting hit.
And secondly, my cat did that too. And at first I wanted to do the same punishment that you did to yours, but I asked my mom, and she told me that it is probably an infection of some kind. I know that the vet is expensive and all, but think about it. Would you rather have your money or your cat. These infections can kill them. And it isn't a peaceful death either. It is usually very painful.
So please from one cat lover to the next take the poor feline to the vet.

I know you mentioned you are not able to get her to a vet right now, although if you can in the near future, it might be a good choice. For now, possibly try a covered box if you dont have one already...this isolates it from the rest of the house. It might help her keep it separated. Good Luck and I hope the problem can be taken care of for you and your cat as well.

Perhaps she doesn't like the smell of her litter. Try changing brands that don't have any scent or one that isn't scoopable. If it's a covered litter box, try taking the cover off to make it easier for your cat to enter the litter box. I hope it helps.
