Its not that they do not like them, its that their job is to make you a better writer and unless you see what you need to improve on, you will not be able to improve. Writing is a process that includes lots of editing and rewriting.

They just want to help the student see what could be better, so s/he can write a better, more complete paper the next time. They are there to teach, and this is a more individual opportunity.

Because the teachers have gone to college and their students are still in high school.
English was one of my better subjects. I did quite well on essays, if I do say so myself!
