Troops have to bolt scrap metal to humvees for armor, troops are being killed and wounded because they don't adequate body armor, and now the army isn't supplying enough silly string to detect mines? In the country leading the world in military spending and spending ginormous amounts of money in Iraq? And somehow it's the people that want to bring the troops home that are accused of not supporting them? Am I missing something or is this truly "bass ackwards."

They should at least bring Rumsfeld back so they can fire him again.

Because it can help them! I'm not sure where you're going with this. People want to donate things and send packages to the troops to help them.....why not add silly string to the list of things to send them? We can't send them armour!!

We have a lot more people getting killed by buried IEDs than we do getting blown up in buildings where the silly string would be useful. And hello silly string is neon and is damn near impossible to clean up so since there are many times that these guys need to get in and out undetected...how exactly do you propose doing that if you're spraying neon silly string? There are times it sounds like it'd be useful but nor the most part it sounds to me like it'd just be one more thing to have to carry....and they have enough to carry especially considering all the body armor they have to wear (and that YES they are being provided!) So if they want it then honestly get your family to send it. We have to buy quite a bit of stuff anyway and I personally don't see it as being something that the military should foot the bill for. I think what would be better is if they'd equip all the soldiers with the stuff they use during surgeries to stop bleeding (sorry I can't remember the name of it!)

Obviously many people answer questions without knowing what they're talking about. I read the article and think that this is a solution that the troops discovered on their own and the word has been spread by one concerned mother.

We could hope that this simple item could be provided but don't count on government to get the process going anytime soon. They'll need 400 requisition forms and a Haliburton contract.

Everyone I know who has a "support the troops" bumper sticker seems to think that means support the politicians and send thank-you cards to the troops. "Bass Ackwards" is putting it politely!

In World War 2 GI's used to weld pieces of tank track or other steel, mount sand bags to the sides rear and front of Sherman tanks to make up for the deficient armor as protection against German tank shells. No army in the world can prepare for anything and everything. You do the best you can with what you have. Sometimes it takes a bit of improvisation.

Yes you are bass akwards.

It is overblown reporting and anti-war propaganda. It was the same for us in Viet Nam. The reporters, hoping to make a name for themselves, latched onto some minute incident and blew it all out of proportion.
My favorite example was a soldier using old uniform parts for toilet paper. An over zealous reporter stated that there was a shortage of toilet paper in VietNam. Nothing could have been further from the truth. It is just that most of us had dysentary most of the time we were over there and the cloth felt a lot better then paper. It got blown out of proportion and many of us received toilet paper in the mail, not knowing why.

My neighbor just got back from Iraq he said it is not that bad it is just sensationalism.

The silly string is simply sprayed in a building, if it all hits the ground then there is no trip wire to a probable I.E.D.
If it floats from the ground then there is a wire there and problems start.

How about we strap some of those politicians in to a humvee and send them for a ride through Iraq? I give'm five minutes before they start cryin' like babies! I bet that would change a lot things around here!
