First off, camcorders are terrible for stills with only the best having a megapixal of 3 or 4. For prints, 3 or 4 is the starting megapixal rating. However, camcorders are for video and record in 640x480, and 640x480 is .3 megapixal. Therefore, all dvd camcorders are excellent. So why are there ratings of megapixal in camcorders? Think of your digital zoom. The digital zoom is the same in digital still cameras and video cameras. Both enlarge the pixals to create a zoom effect. With low megapixal cameras this can cause a significant drop in picture quality as the picture becomes grainy. Higher megapixal cameras can hide this loss of picture quality in just the total amount of pixals. A 3 megapixal cut in half is still 1.5 megapixals and that is still great for .3 megapixal video or the standard video 640x480.
As for choosing, ask yourself, "Am I going to need a large zoom and take advantage of the digital zoom and are my still shots going to be really important?" If the stills are really important, then for the same money you can buy a still camera that takes very nice video! This can run around the same cost as a low cost dvd camcorder ($400). Check out Canon's S3IS digital camera. But this will need to be viewed on a computer until it is switched to a dvd (computer edited). New computers come with video editing software.

i might seem strictly on the megapixels and not on the digital zoom. digital zoom sucks. that is not cautioned. In digital zoom, the digital camera is largely blowing up the image by using itself. it consistently looks undesirable. the significant function on any digital camera is optical zoom and on no account digital zoom. As for the megapixels. the two 4 or 6 is plenty for exhibiting on a television. in actuality I thinkthe decision might could be downgraded on the two to play on a television. that's performed immediately once you're making a DVD or paly right away on the television.

Yes - camcorder can be used as a digital camera..

these days cam corders with 3.2 mpixel capability are available as well.

I would suggest you to go for SONY if u dont have hard limits on how much u want to spend..

Canon is not good...it starts giving motor sounds after 2 yrs or so..which u dont want to be captured.
