Yes, because the parents tend to focus on that one child and it can be difficult for the only child. There are no siblings to take your parents attention off your back. In my case, my Mom always had a nervous disorder. She was often very difficult because she had no other person to agress but me. I was pretty much the victim of her emotions which were changing from minute to minute and my childhood was not the most pleasant.
Of course, most times, only children are spoiled and have it a little rougher getting along with other children in school at the beginning. When and only child finds out the world does not rotate around them; it can be a shock.
The other side of the coin is that only children are usually a lot more self reliant, have better vocabularies, early learning advantages, and have more resources available to them through the parents and grand parents.
It's kind of a double edged sword for the Onlies of the world but we have no alternative other than to make the best we can of things that come our way.
