I'm American and I don't call jam, jelly. I call jam, jam and jelly, jelly.

Jam is fruit preserves, or whole fruit cooked with sugar until it becomes very soft.

Jelly is made from fruit juice and sugar. It's clear and it's texture is firm.

Hope this helps you!

Jam and Jelly are two different things so Americans use both....

Jelly, jam and preserves are all made from fruit mixed with sugar and pectin. The difference between them comes in the form that the fruit takes.

In jelly, the fruit comes in the form of fruit juice.
In jam, the fruit comes in the form of fruit pulp or crushed fruit (and is less stiff than jelly as a result).
In preserves, the fruit comes in the form of chunks in a syrup or a jam.
Pectin is an undigestible carbohydrate (fiber). It is found in the cell walls of most fruit. When heated with sugar in water, it gels, giving jam, jelly and preserves their thickness.

Jell-O is entirely different. It is made from gelatin, which is a protein.

Jam is really preserves and contains the whole crushed fruit while jelly is described a gelatin like spread made from the fruit but from which the fruit flesh has been removed and the natural pectin from the fruit causes it to jell, hence the term jelly.

Jam is different from Jelly when last I checked. Jelly is the wobbly one and Jam is the one that is together, although they are both spreads. Jelly is more clear and loose while Jam is thicker and not so transparent.
