It depends on the size of your cup.

1 l of water = 1kg

So let's say a cup = 0.2 l then you have 100 g of water in half a cup.

OK, for the metric folks out there, it should probably be pointed out that when an American says "half a cup" he or she is probably referring to a unit of measurement, not a drinking vessel. A cup is equal to 0.2365 liters. Therefore half a cup is about 118.25 mL, and since the density of water is 1 g/mL, the mass would be about 118.25 g.

Since the question was asked in imperial, the answer should be converted back into imperial. A gram is 0.0353 oz, so the water weighs 4.1742 oz.

Is the cup half full or half empty?

Seriously, a one cubic meter cup of water will usually contain 1,000 kg of water. It all depends on the size of your cup.

Let's assume I have a cylindrical cup with a diameter of 8cm and a height of 12 cm, the total volume of the cup would be 603.2 cubic cm (approximately). Half of this cup would contain about 300g of water.

Without the size or volume of the cup, it's impossibl;e to determine the mass of the cup of water.

1 cup [US] = 0.23658238 liter
1 cup [Canada] = 0.2273045 liter
1 cup [metric] = 0.25 liter

water density = 1.000 g/cm3, liquid
1 liter = 1,000 cubic centimeter
1 gram = 0.002204623 pound

These values should allow you to calculate your answer. Note that one cup is not the same in the USA, Canada and the UK!

Hope this helps!
