I even did this...I wrote what makes you happy...as if happiness is something that happens based on what happens to us, so if that item is missing, we cannot be MADE happy (does this make sense?)
Let's face it, there are people in horrible circumstances that are still happy and others with everything (loving parents, lots of money, loving families, great health, nice home, and they say "my life sucks."
What ultimately is the reason that you are happy? Is it something that makes you happy or what ultimately is the reason for your happiness.

"Happiness" is a perception of ones state of being. One can change how one physically experiences time, but internal states are determined by biological stimulus. One can temporarily alter this state (i.e. fasting, drugs, meditation, sleep) but the framework of emotions are determined by the self image of the individual.
If there is no peace within, disassociation and paranoid projection vilifies the perceived threats to ones happiness. Without this balance, the psyche is dominated by a false ego which masks the self loathing.
For me, I guess excepting that it isn't all about me is what is ultimately the reason for my happiness.

Simple things make me happy. Seeing a smile on a some one else just like if I see someone sad I feel compassion for whatever they are going through. But under the circumstance if I was going through a hard time I imagine someones kindness. But other than that my husband and children. Peace and love be with you.

Happiness is a choice, as is misery. We choose to look beyond circumstances and be joyful because of the promise of eternity in Heaven with Jesus, it's the only thing that makes life worth living here on earth!

Ultimately it's the decision to "be happy." For me (atheist) it's partly that life is short and this is the only go-round I've got. I can chose to live it in misery or enjoying it every minute that I can.
I would add, however, that if a person is suffering from clinical depression, it is largely a matter of brain chemistry (serotonin levels and all that). For people suffering from this disease happiness is not a simple "choice."

I believe happiness must come from within.
A lot of people like to blame others for making them unhappy; but happiness is a choice. They have a choice to stay where they are uncomfortable, or a choice to go or do something else where they will be happy.

The final question? Promise.
Happiness can be both internal and external. A flower, beautiful sunset, child's laughter - all the old cliches can make me happy. So can a job well done.

Nothing or noone can make me happy. I have to be happy inside. I can choose to be happy or unhappy.

People certainly choose how they feel about things. No one can "make" you feel happy or sad. It is your decision how things effect you.
