the 42 inches is measured diaganolly, ie bottom left hadn corner to top right hand corner = 42 inches.

not 42 inches along any one side

TV's and Computer monitors are measured from the upper left to the lower right corner of the viewing area, diagonally. So it is not 42 inches wide, but rather something less than that.

Diagonal measurement. All TVs have been since the diagonal screen was first used, although Philo T Farnsworth, the inventor, could never have imagined plasma.

I am curious, however, contemplating shelling out the cash for one, how their longevity will play out. I know they're very susceptible to "burn in", but they haven't been around enough to learn how long they will last under normal usage.
