According to the law if you have any equipment in the house capable of receiving a television signal originating in the UK you must have a TV licence before operating it. As Sky and NTL originate in the UK you need a licence for that too, even if you can't receive a terrestrial signal.

If I am not wrong, you should have a TV licence even if you don't have a TV card in your computer. Because you can watch on-line TV using our computer.

I know someone who got done for not having a TV license for his PC's TV card. You have to have one if you watch TV, period.

Also, if you bought it from a shop rather than some bloke in the pub, they don't need a detector van to catch you. Why do you think you were asked for your postcode and house number when you bought it?

You need one if you intend to watch any broadcast television whether that is BBC, ITV, Sky or any other channel/broadcaster.

"What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence?

You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence."
