It doesn't matter if I buy a new one, the family dog will pee on it eventually. I was hoping there was some sort of repellent that was safe for the dog and the rug

Sorry... I have had considerable experience and there is NO way... Yes, they sell some of that stuff to keep dogs/cats off of this and that but it is JUST to get your money and does not work. If the dog is young enough.. it can be taught by scolding and light tapping on the rear to stay off.. they will learn but that is the ONLY way.

Not sure if repellents work to keep the dog off the rug. But I do know that you have to get all the urine out or he will keep peeing on it. I use and recommend Nature's Miracle. It is an enzyme that destroys the urine. It is available at most pet stores. I use it straight, not diluted in my rug shampooer, and it works great. You will probably have to use it a number of times to get all the urine, and that is the key...do NOT stop using it, even if the smell gets worse. Actually, that means it is working. Keep using it until you can no longer smell the urine when the rug is wet. And I use it just one more time to be safe. You have to let it soak into your rug and padding. So spray or use the rug cleaner to apply it, let it sit for a while before vacuuming it up. It has to get to the pad too. (If you have a pad under your carpet) If it is an area rug, with no padding, I would also clean the floor underneath the carpet with the Nature's Miracle a few times. It could be the floor underneath the carpet that is attracting the dog to the rug. So clean that thoroughly too.

there are sprays that you can buy that keep dogs from returning. My daughter's dog had puppies and they do go back to places to pee. it is the smell. they smell wayyyyyy more than us! I brought a spray called stay off and sprayed it around and on the area they were using and they stopped. just be careful though, they will try and find another spot. As far as they rug, the only thing I can think off is a carpet cleaner that says it will remove the underside stains. I forgot the name of the one i used but it said for things that cannot be put in the washer and i applied that and then blotted with a towel. Good luck! :)

I have never heard of anything that has been successful. I have heard of treating the dog to keep him from peeing on th rug. Our vet says that it is a common problem with many causes. Have you looked into why the dog pees on the rug? He could be acting out in anger, he could be sick with a bladder or kidney problem. I would contact your vet and go from there.

wash it in lysol, the smell will detere the dog, or if that doesnt work try vinager, use a spray bottle mix some vinager with water, and spray the rug... this should do the trick, and it isnt harmful to the dog. hope it works for ya
