You probably mean a diode. It's an electronic component that regulates the direction of current flow. It will allow current to flow in one direction, but not the other. The word diode comes from the Greek, meaning "two paths," thought they were called rectifiers when they were first invented. The best known type of diode is a glass vacuum tube containing a cathode (positively charged plate) and an anode (negatively charged plate). The current flow within the divice will dictate the allowable current flow within the circuit as a whole.

Diod=Diode.
The term diode usually implies a small signal device with current typically in the milliamp range; and a rectifier, a power device, conducting from1 to 1000 amps or even higher. Many diodes or rectifiers are identified as 1NXXXX . A semiconductor diode consists of a PN junction and has two(2) terminals, an anode(+) and a cathode(-). Current flows from anode to cathode within the diode.
An ideal diode is like a light switch in your home. When the switch is closed, the circuit is completed; and the light turns on.When the switch is open, there is no current and the light is off.
However, the diode has an additional property; it is unidirectional, i.e.current flows in only one direction(anode to cathode internally).When a forward voltage is applied, the diode conducts; and when a reverse voltage is applied, there is no conduction. A mechanical analogy is a ratchat, which allows motion in one direction only.

The Diode is an electronic component

N type :-
When in pure germanium or silicon the impurity of the penta valant element (having five valence electrones) like arsenic,antimoney or phosphorous is added in small difinite proortion , N-type semiconductor results

P type:-
When in pure germanium or silicon the impurity of the trivalant element (having three valence electrones) like boron,gallium or indium is added in small difinite proortion , P-type semiconductor results.

Thus in a semiconductor when there is P-type semiconductor at one end and N-type semiconductor near to it at the other end , is called the PN junction diode.

One terminal is bought out of the P-tpye and it is called the Anode.Similarly one terminal is brought out of the N-type semiconductor and it is called Cathode.

well if you're asking about a DIODE, its a simple semiconductor device that has an anode and cathode and allows current to flow one way through the device (similar to a one way check valve).
