if you hear a squeeling well the car is running without turning the wheel, than belt. but if its squeeking while turning the wheel left and right, than try spraying a little WD-40 down where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. the rubber boot down there could be dried out, and hardend.

RE:
What could be the problem when the steering wheel squeaks in a car? I have a Ford Escort.?
My steering wheel started squeaking when the weather got colder. I think my Ford Escort has power steering. I didn't get the new owners manual. I'm wondering if I need steering fluid, or if the steering belt may need to be replaced.

If you hear your steering wheel sqeaking inside the car without the engine running, with all the windows rolled up and then turn the steering wheel back and forth and the car has cruise control buttons on the steering wheel, chances are the factory grease on the (copper disc) under the steering wheel (remove it and grease it and reinstall it)There is a big nut under the center of the wheel that has to be removed to access the bottom of the steering wheel-If it has an air bag in the steering wheel-don't remove it-take it to a garage to have it repaired!!!! It could explode in your face causing serious injury.Try spraying Lithium grease in the crack where the steering wheel and housing meet. Then rotate steering wheel a few times to work in good.Should solve your problem. If not then check belts for wear and looseness.

If your vehicle is on rack and pinion steering you may want to grease the bearings. If you are not capable of doing this go to a lube station and tell them your problem. If that doesn't work try clearing out the power steering fluid reservoir and putting in new fluid. If it is the belt the easiest thing to do is a simple trick. Rub a bar of soap on the whole belt and it will stop squeeking, but if the belt gets wet you will have to "re-soap" the belt.

fords are very notorious for the power steering pump to make noise after replacing the fluid. any good transmission fluid conditioner added to the power steering fluid after removing some of the fluid will eliminate this problem. bg makes a good fluid also wynns make a good conditioner.this may sound like a hoax but, it really works.

if your car has power steering check the fluid level then check the power steering belt tension. if its making a noise when you turn the wheel with the engine running and there's been a temperature change its most likely to be the belt especially if its had work done on it i.e belts changed, water pump, cam belt etc.

sounds like the steering fluid level is low or could be the steering column starting to go out.
