Most Muslims responding here seem to be ignorant of the connection between mutilation of the genitalia of little girls and Islam. There is a connection: http://www.religioustolerance.org/fem_cirm.htm
Quoting from the above site:
<
* 1949-MAY-28: They decided that it is not a sin to reject female circumcision.
* 1951-JUN-23: They stated that female circumcision is desirable because it curbs "nature" (i.e. sexual drive among women). It stated that medical concerns over the practice are irrelevant.
* 1981-JAN-29: The Great Sheikh of Al-Azhar (the most famous University of the Islamic World) stated that parents must follow the lessons of Mohammed and not listen to medical authorities because the latter often change their minds. Parents must do their duty and have their daughters circumcised.>>

It's good to read that both Muslims and Non-Muslims sometimes share the same opinion about something, in this case condemning this practice. Nevertheless there are some frightening postings of some people here and evidence that some Muslim scholars defend this practice.
These are those rare moments when civilized people from all creeds should come together and ban once and for all these barbaric and inhumane practice. Stop using the name of God in order to mutilate another human being.

Islam has never ordained, permitted, encouraged, or even mentioned this heinous practice, reported in some tribal people, some of them may have been nominal-ignorant Muslims. What should Islam stop ? Muslims and Jews by religion, and others by dictates of Hygiene practice circumcision on male only. On google search, I have read about the prevalent practice of male circumcision with positive notes, and the female c. with negative notes. Apparently no 'Organised and well established' Religion shall allow any negative act..

Hello,
YES! 100% definately STOP!!,STOP!!,STOP!! this utterly stone age barbaric practise. Its nothing short of torture, it must cause the most terrible long term suffering for the women & girls involved. (stuff of your worst nightmares!!).
Frankly, its totally disgusting and even makes me sick thinking about it. It also makes me furious as a man that this should be inflicted without any choice in the matter on girls.
If rite's of passage are needed for young girls & young woman then fine! but cutting off of the female genitals is NOT the way too do it IMO. After all there are plenty of other cultures where this isnt undertaken and girls pass successfully into womanhood.

Firstly, Islam is a religion, it is not a person, so islam does not circumcise girls.
Secondly, it is not Islamic to circumcise women, it is a cultural thing, i think done mainly in african countries, and some of them are not even muslim countries. I agree it should be stopped, but it is not Islam which states that girls should be circumcised.

There is nothing in Islam that says to do that or recommends that. It is a cultural thing in certain countries but has nothing to do with the religion of Islam.

It is not an Islamic tradition.
It is practiced in some African cultures as a way of keeping wives submissive and faithful. They reason if sex does not bring pleasure to a woman she will not leave her spouse for another.
It is barbaric and wrong, and circumcision of girls *and* boys should be outlawed.

It depends on if you look at it as a cultural norm, or a human rights violation.
Western hegemony dictates that it is a human rights violation.
The cultures that practice it believe it is necessary. Forcing them to stop would be taking away their sovereignty.
Lucky for the girls it's only a matter of time before it is one planet, under the US, with liberty and justice for all.
Personally, I think it is horrifying! Imagine not having orgasms. Yikes!

It is my personal opinion that the practice of female circumcision is barbaric , painful and totally unnecessary.
Circumcision in males promotes good hygiene. I cannot imagine what it promotes in girls. Kills pleasure maybe ......
The practice should be stopped.
