I have been an off and on smoker for over 16 years...I can pick up cigarettes, put them down....but lately I have been stressed out and smoking more and I was wondering what the FIRST signs of addiction were?....I don't want to go to my grave over these things...

the first sign of addiction? when you smoked the first cigarette and the you lit another one. You were already addicted to the habit, to the taste or just to the fact that you smoke. Try and work out a lot, that will make you unable to smoke since your lungs will hurt if you do. Push your limits if you work out and you won't want to smoke!

You can quit only if you want to quit. Me, personally I've been smoking that long too but on and on and I don't want to quit. You will go to the grave when God wants you there. The signs of addiction to me is that I rather buy a pack of cigarettes than to eat a meal if that's all the money I had. Smoking does calm your nerves, I never wish I had taken up the habit but stress does lots of things to your body too and everyone needs a vice to get rid of the stress whether it be smoking, drinking or even eating too much.

Take it from a smoker, mate, if you are smoking at all is indication of addiction. Smoking for stress is a sign too. People who 'don't' smoke, don't smoke for stress, you see. Only us dopes, who are addicted, smoke for stress relief.
If you are concerned about it, give it up now.

I get anxiety if I deny myself the cigarette. If YOU WANT a cigarette but tell yourself YOU don't NEED it, oooonly want it...
YOU are addicted if YOU smoke one then.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. If you know you don't need it, and you don't even WANT it and you're still smoking, or you just friggin love it and can't get enough... I'd say then you were addicted.

That is one of the signs..another is craving them when you have gone so long with out one. Get a psychological need for them I think that is about it. Oh you can also get the shakes
