It doesn't take much of an education to open your mouth

Get yourself a good voice teacher first and foremost!!! ttempting to sing without the assist of a coach (who knows their stuff) can lead to damage of the voice thatm cnnot be easily corrected... I would suggest checking with your area college and asking them about a voice teacher. The teachers there may have the spot for you, or they may have an outside instructor they would recommend. I notice a lot of the people above have mentioned singers who have/had very sucessful careers in music with little or no training...HOWEVER, did you know that many of those same singers are trained well before they begin their careers...Madonna started off studying Opera...that's why she was able to play the role of Evita when the movie began it's casting. Those singers who DO NOT study, OFTEN end up with a condition called vocal nodes and it can literally DESTROY a voice!

Seriously, if you want to sing...if you truly love to sing and want to be able to continue to sing well into your 50's, 60's, 70's...lol...GET A VOICE TEACHER!!! PLEASE don't damage your instrument by trying to go it on your own!

If you want to pursue a professional singing career in the classical sense (Broadway, musical stage, opera), then you will need (usually) to have professional training in the form of a college or conservatory degree.

If you are looking at performing at the pop level then you would still need to get some professional direction in the form of a vocal coach or teacher.

As in anything else, the more training and background that you have the better chance you have for success.

Best of luck.

you don't really need education but it would be good to have something to fall back on.
1. It would be helpful to know how to sing.
2. even if u know how u sing you should still get voice lessons.
3. u should have some knowledge of the music industry if thats ur goal.
4. you should know various music terminology, ie. crescendo, major third...fifth..etc.
5. also i think that overall do you homework on everything because if u want to sing professionally, just like in any other business you need to know what you're getting into. So do your research first.

hope i helped ;-)

You can get a degree in music performance from some schools. You would be expected to take private lessons in voice and another instrument, probably piano. You would also have to take music theory classes, as well as music history. Of course, if you just want to sing, you can try your luck on American Idol. Most of those people have no education whatsoever!

Depends on your goals. In a garage band: none.
As a professional singer - voice lessions, music theory, acting lessions..
As an opera singer- music / vocal college, years and years of training.
