My cat has a cold, and I want to take her to the vet. However, my parent's don't want to spend the money, they'd rather just give her away or put her to sleep. Is there any way to help my cat get better without going to the vet? Please no rude comments, it is a very serious matter.

First off, I just wanted to let you know that if anyone makes a rude comment to you about this it is because they are insecure. I have seen some really rude comments on here and it just defeats the purpose of this place. My personal opinion is you should sit down with your parents and explain to them just how important your cat is to you. Tell them that putting a cat to sleep just because it is sick is very drastic. Cats are living creatures and they should at least be willing to take him/her to the vet to get meds. Second off, taking an animal to the vet can be affordable if you take him/her to a local clinic. My sister does this with her dog and it is much cheaper than going to the vet. Call your local humane society and see where the local clinic might be. Tell your parents your are willing to take the cat by yourself, even if that means walking/taking the bus, and they might be so impressed with your maturity that they will let you keep the cat. Please do not give up and express to your parents that you love this cat very much.

The best thing for your kitty is to take her to the vet. She will probably need antibiotics if she has a respiratory infection. It's a very common thing for cats to get. Since the cost is an issue, ask if they will work with you on a payment plan or if they accept Care Credit. It's a credit card that you can apply for and it's for use only at medical facilities. It can be used for both human & veterinary care as long as the doctor you're going to accepts it. You can get more information and apply on-line at www.carecredit.com Be sure to inquire about payment options before you take the cat in. I work at a vet clinic and it's amazing how many people bring their pets in and then when everything is all said and done they tell us that they don't have any money. We've actually had to turn people into collection agencies for non-payment so just be sure that you have all the details worked out before going in. It will save everyone a lot of time and headache. I hope this helps and that your kitty is better soon! Best of luck to you both!

A similar thing happened to this cat in the neighborhood that used to wander all the time. When her owners found out she had a shattered hip- they just had her put down because they were too cheap & selfish to spend $ on her. It just broke my heart to hear about this. Please don't let them do this to your cat. See if any animal shelters such as Humane Society can help- it's worth a chance to ask them if they can help at all & explain the circumstances to them. Also, ask a relative for some cash, too- you may be surprised but a lot of people do love animals & would most likely help you both. If it's just a simple cold, she should get over it, because animals are very good at curing themselves as long as it's nothing serious. Just keep other pets away from her for now (so they don't get what she may have), keep her inside & ask a vet for other suggestions too. Hope she gets better!

It sounds like your cat needs to be on antibiotics and they are cheap. The only thing is, that you will have to go to a vet to get a prescription, you can just go pick them up without having your cat examined. Another thing is that if you want to have your cat vaccinated and the cat does not get better, the vet will not vaccinate your cat. My suggestion is to call around to local vet clinics and see what their prices are. Then approach your parents about it. A cold is so easily treated and will go away with treatment, however without medication it can become worse. Some warning signs are, labored breathing, paleness in the gums, ears or inner eyes, dehydration (how you can test for dehydration is, pinch the skin between the cats shoulder blades. If it comes back to normal shpe quickly, the cat is not dehydrarted if it stays pinched, then the cat is dehydrated and requires fluids. ) Keep your cat indoors and well hydrated for now. Hope this helps.

it could be something serious. Your vet will tell you when it's too serious and recommend putting the cat to sleep. Responsible pet owners need to take care of animals when they are sick or not have them. Call a vet and explain what's going on and ask how much it will be. If you're old enough to post on yahoo answers you're old enough to earn the money to pay off the vet. Some vets will let you pay for a few weeks.

hi there, as long as your cat has a simple cold it should clear up of its own accord with a little tlc, kept indoors and warm.

Otherwise if your parents are on a low income / on benefits I believe the PDSA will treat your pet for free (or at a discounted rate) if money is the issue.

I really hope you cat gets better and lives a long healthy life with you.

Most cats catch the"kitten cold" at least once in their lives. Just keep her comfortable and soften any crusts around the nose and eyes with a cotton ball soaked in warm water. Be sure she has plenty to drink, as she may not eat while she is sick. She will more than likely be fine, as Mother Nature takes care of her own.

Take the cat and walk to the vet when your parents are not around.

Keep your kitty indoors, make sure she is kept warm & dry. Have plenty of fluid & food available. There is no need to put your cat to sleep she is not going to die from a cold! Hopefully you have her vaccines up to date if not convince your parents that your kitty needs to be seen by a vet. Don't be forced into giving her away or being put to sleep.
