France has not abandoned God. They have just separated religion from state - something that USA is also supposed to be following. But then with the religious right, the republican party etc religion is totally mixed up in US politics. After all George Bush won mainly because of support from the pastors telling their sheep (the voters) who to vote for.

In the study of histroy and "western" thought, the French accepted a mind set that they were no absolutes. In France they had the bloody French Revolution. That mind set moved into areas of the Soviet Union. Over time we see that it failed.
The UK and USA beleived in absolutes and held to values. Today these values are being eroded away by the liberal media/public schools/colleges.

France abandoned christianity, when that happened the stupid (christian) americans assumed they abandoned God or, more specifically the *one true god*, some Frenchmen became atheists, but that might have been Gods will for all they know=)

The French revolution and Enlightenment damaged the Church in a very big way and it is only in the last few decades that the church is making a recovery from it.

because the french monarchy was much more in cahoots with the church, and the revolutionists knew it.
