Hi Alan,
I am a professional Interior Designer, specializing in Senior Living. Here are some of my guidelines for chairs for able-bodied seniors:
Seat depth should not exceed 21". Any deeper than that and Seniors have trouble getting out.
Arm heights should be between 24" and 26" high so that the Senior can push her/his self up out of the chair easily.
Seat height should be around 18-20".
A few manufacturers to check out: Lane, Sherrill, American of Martinsville, Century.
If your parents are not able-bodied (or have problems with incontinence), there is a different set of criteria, and different vendors that you should look to for seating. If this is the case, post again, and I'll give you some other options.
