My son is small in stature. Gets unexplained fevers sometimes and generally just feels unwell. He is 12 yrs. old. I've been to several docs and routine blood tests are normal. I'm am at the end of my rope and don't know where to turn. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to clarify a few things. Firstly, is your child actually short in stature (i.e. less than 5th percentile on the CDC growth charts) or just shorter than average? They are not the same thing. Secondly, is he really having fevers (temps greater than 100.5F; I have may parents who believe their child is having fevers at 99.1F, which is a normal temperature), and how frequently? Are there any conditions in the family (inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disease, etc)?

Barring real fever and true short stature, know that a majority of generalized "not feeling well" (as well as virtually all chst pain and abdominal pain) in adolescents tends to be psychosomatic.

If your child is truly less than 5th percentile for height, he probably deserves more than the "routine" labs. Every board certified pediatrician should be able to thoroughly workup short stature, or should refer you to an endocrinologist to do so.

Additionally, if your child has really been having fevers for more than a couple of weeks despite thorough work-up in the outpatient office, he also should be getting more than the "routine" labs. These kids may even be admitted to the hospital for workup of "fevers of unknown origin."

If blood work is all normal, I would suggest some good liquid vitamins for him, like Life Force, but I would also recommend a good child psychologist or psychiatrist....he may have mental and emotional issues that he is expressing thru illness. This doesn't make the illness any less real, it is just another reason for it and a possible way to treat it.

You need to see a specialist. Have you tried the Mayo clinic yet, or Saint Jude's? This isn't right for a 12 year old boy- as you know.

Good luck!

Does he take any vitamins? They really built up their immune system and they become more resistant from colds. Have him wash his hands when he comes home from school, they can pick up germs so easily. My kids are sick around this time of year too. Its sounds like you are a great mom and doing all you can do. Good luck , hope he feels better.
