A person who makes his raison d'etre the profession of soldiering. This proffession requires a great deal of skill and usually encompasses alot of passion for its way of life. Many are drawn to this field - also known as 'the theatre of war' - due to an almost sport-like thrill it gives to it's participants. The soldier does not usually earn a great deal of money and risks death and injury to earn his keep. There are often other reasons that men become soldiers the most common of them being the idea that they are protecting the liberty of their people; and in wartime many feel that it is right to go to war for their country and it would be dishonourable, cowardly and wrong to avoid it.

Someone willing to do a job that others won't, and receive little other than ridicule and opprobrium for it.
"A 18 year old kid from a lower income family who couldn't afford college and wanted to do something special so he or her joined the military hoping they could do something cool like in those commercial on TV and video games, have them pay for college and then live happily ever after. Then being sent off to Iraq, being scared to death then getting killed or worst getting limbs torned off by a bomb. Coming home and getting a metal of honor and live the rest of his life being ignored by the government and living off on 200 dollars a month salary."
^ And you can keep your stupid comments to yourself there, Mr. Yuppie Liberal. It's jackasses like you that make me glad I'm not a civilian anymore.
ETA: Nathan B., as much smack as you're talked in other questions, this time you've come up with as good an answer as I've yet seen here. Well said!

The word soldier simply means someone that is trained to do something. Simple.
A "tank" soldier is trained to use tanks to the best of their abilites.
A "foot" soldier is... blah, blah, blah.... I'm sure you get it by now. = D
