i was just wondering what people thought about photography with regular digital cameras [ Like this one: http://www.occasion-numerique.com/images/appareil-photo-sony-cyber-shot-dsc-p93a-487.jpg ].

do you still consider it photography/art if its not taken with lets say a Canon Rebel or an expensive Nikon or a really good camera like that?

shooting with a point a shoot camera can still produce wonderful artistic shots. I have seen plenty of work done with cameras such as the one pictured and enjoyed them just fine. I have worked with many cameras in my photography career which were point and shoot such as holgas, an s70 and Polaroid cameras and loved the final results. These are great for "snapshot" photography. However I feel you will have greater success with an SLR camera just because of the control you have over your shots and use of lenses.

I agree that art is subjective. My philosophy has always been it's not the camera or the equipment that make art, it's the eye of the artist. You can have all the high tech camera equiment the world has to offer, and you can still create nothing but crap if you don't have an eye for it.

I work in a camera store and a man once brought in a point-and-shoot Nikon camera that he had dropped in water. The images the camera produced were blurry and discolored, but amazingly an art studio offered to buy one of his prints for hundreds of dollars...

I great camera does not make art. The person that is using the camera is the one that makes art. The camera is just the tool that is used to capture the art. If you can not see the image in your head before you push the button then it doesn't matter how expensive the camera is.

It tends to irritate me a little when people get so worked up about the type of camera a picture was taken with. It doesn't matter - if you are able to take good photographs you will do so whatever your camera. After all no one asks a painter what make of paint or brushes they are using.

Art is subjective, I don't think it matters but, with a SLR camera you can manipulate the settings for betters effects. I'm not sure if you can do that with those cameras. For ex. setting the shutter speed to lower speed to get that soft look to running water. Also the higher the mp the better the picture looks if you blow it up to say poster size.
