How do I find out my past employers tax ID numbers so I may file my tax return. I tried the good old fashion ask nicely, but was told I would have to wait for my W-4's. That's all fine and dandy but I was hoping to use the last paycheck stub from my last job and be done with it much sooner. Faster return that way too.

Oh and if it is free the better. One site was charging over $99 just for one search!

Why will I need the form? For years I have E-Filed and nothing was mailed. Is this new? I always keep the forms scanned and hard copy for future reference, but mail them in? Uh oh. I'm guilty of not doing that for the last 5 years.

I agree. Try the accounting department, but you will need the form when you file your taxes.

You can get your employer's tax ID number from your paystub. If your employer used a payroll service such as Paychex or Ceridian to process their payroll, or if they used somewhat sophisticated software to generate the paychecks (I'm talking something like Peoplesoft, Oracle, or SAP) it will have your employer's tax ID on it. Otherwise, you need to wait for your W-2, which will be sent in January (W-4 is the form you fill out to tell your employer how much taxes to withhold from your pay).

And when you e-file, you do not need to mail in your W-2's, the IRS really doesn't need it since they will have received a copy from your employer already.

May I ask why do you need your employer ID number???? Dou you need to file tax return and didn't receive your W2? Call IRS they will easaly force your employer to send you your W2(I've done it in the past) If employer went out of business or couln't be found IRS will tell what kind of form number is the substitue of W2. You can file with this form. You have to just estimate your gross income and taxes deducted by your employer(good if you have your pay stubs)

If you haven't been waiting until the year end to get your correct total wages, it will eventually be found out by the IRS and you will get audited. Even if you e-file, you still need to have the correct year end total. This won't happen until you get your W-4. Even if you wait, most people send them out by the second week in January, so you will still be early filing. And for them not telling you their number, there is nothing you can do about that. And even if you pay for those searches, I don't think you will find what you need.

Yes, an immigrant can obtain a social security number, but only if you have one of the following: * Permanent Resident Card (I-551) * Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) and an unexpired foreign passport * Work permit card from the Department of Homeland Security (I-766 or I-688B) * Or, after becoming a citizen of the United States, a U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Citizenship

You just asked the wrong person. Call the accounting department. You still have to wait for your W-4 though, it has to be submitted.
