I know of one site, http://www.freejapaneselessons.com it teached basic words and grammar.

You can always try Rosetta Stone, it's expensive, however, though very effective.

You can download Before You Know It Lite Japanese, it's a flashcard programme.

As with learning any other language, full immersion.
1. Travel to Japan, find a sponsor family, live with absolutely no outside english contact.
2. Find a Japanese girl friend.
Or both. Otherwise, a couple of years is more likely just to cover the basics.
