You are correct, it's an idiotic phrase that some preachers have put forth. Many Christians are clueless as to what "Love" towards Jesus is all about. They are taught that Jesus is some kind of hippie that just throws flowers and speaks pretty words to make us feel better. The true Love we are to have for Jesus is obedience, reverence, and respect (fear) for His judgment. I get so tired of these candy-coated Christians who worship a saccharin Christ. We are to give profound praise and gratitude for the fact that He died for our sins when we were dead spiritually. Jesus was not a peace maker, He wasn't a pacifist, and when He returns, He comes as the Lion of Judea, doesn't sound like a touchy-feely sweetheart to me. The best of Christians will cower in fear when they stand before Him. The bible tells us that even the righteous will "have the smell of smoke" on them when they enter heaven, meaning they will scarcely be saved.

Love to mankind usually does conjure up romantic notions. But there are all kinds of love, the love of a mom & child, or you love your grandparents. So love takes many forms. Gods love is much higher than what we can even imagine. Usually, with a spouse you feel love because they treat you well, or look good. God's love is unconditional. Really, in this life no one will love you quite the way God can because we usually expect something back.God will love the atheist all through his life, as well as the Christian. Nobody goes through this life without being loved by God. Its whether you accept it.

It means having an intimate relationship with Him...Intmacy doesn't necessarily involve being sexual. But a close, familiar, and usually affectionate or loving personal relationship with Him. That is what God want, a relationship. God want's us to put Him first in our lives. The only way to have a relationship with the Father is through His Son Jesus Christ and having believing that the Father sent His only Son Jesus to die for mankind that we might have a relationship with the Father and stay in fellowship with Him. Just the way He intended it to be when He first created Adam and before they sinned/disobeyed God.

It is much deeper than that. It is not Eros; Affectionate Love. It is Agape; Divine Love.

the term love has several labels...the romantic or intimate connotation you are attributing to it is only one of them. If all you see in love is intimacy you have missed out on alot.

Not really, I'm not Christian, but I guess they mean brotherly love.
I mean, I'm a Muslim and I love Jesus (PBUH) as a prophet, and I love all prophets from Adam till Mohammed (Peace be upon them all).

They don't have a clue, but to answer your question, there is Loving someone, and there is In Love with someone. Sometimes they get it wrong.
